To my esteemed readership – by Rabbi Dovid Abenson

As we all are aware, the numbers are rising dramatically. Many children, bochurim or adults are struggling in their Torah learning, whether its not learning clearly, or lack of motivation. Many have become disenchanted with Yiddishkeit, whilst for others, school has become a mundane chore.

We at shaarhatuamud.com, use a revolutionary approach to upgrading kriah and learning skills. Our highly innovative programs have been extensively researched, tried and tested, for many years. Let me share with you a most recent email I received from a former student.

I must admit my view on Judaism was pessimistic. I was 17 and had been exposed to many negative experiences in the jewish world (students/ teachers/ individual school systems) which only grew with time and like most schools to which I had attended, I found if you aren’t at the top of the class, then you aren’t worth the time of the teacher.

Over time I grew a resentment towards Judaism and everyone who stood for it. (I had become a self hating Jew) At a certain point I had gotten fed up with it all, and was throwing in the towel. Good bye and good riddance!

By some miracle my father found an ad in a newspaper it read: Is your child having trouble learning? Is he not getting the accomplishments he wants? Luckily, we found Rabbi Abenson of Shaar HaTalmud.com, because I had just bought a one way ticket for the “I’m outta here” train on a course for “Never Coming Back Station”.

Looking back, you can really see G-d’s hand. A rigmarole of tests later, Rabbi Abenson had diagnosed what in fact was holding me back. First, everything that I was able to “read” was memorized. I couldn’t read. Second, I didn’t know half the hebrew letters! As well, as the letters I did know, I would confuse for others. No one had ever taught me the letters, or at least properly. Lastly, the different symbols below the letters (Nekudos) I didn’t know. As Rabbi Abenson put it “You’re basically asking the child to read Chinese and you can ask him to look at a page and stare at it for an indefinite amount of time but it’s all gibberish and will never make sense!”

Being honest, when Rabbi Abenson started to evaluate me, I felt very vulnerable and embarrassed. I had worn my inability to read as a badge of shame on myself for a very long time. The truth is I had been truly inept, to which I had been trying to keep hidden from the world. There isn’t anyone who likes showing their flaws, and prior to meeting him, I had thought this was a major flaw of mine. It was not until I met Rabbi Abenson who began to instill in me, that this wasn’t a flaw in me, but rather in the education I had been taught.

One of the biggest thing that stood out from Rabbi Abenson more than any other teacher or Rebbe I have ever had to date, is that he made learning a game. It became something to look forward to. Another thing, he really cared. Something most teachers and Rebbes don’t do is check to see how their students are, or what was going on in their life, and how they can help. Rabbi Abenson is not one of those, but one of the few.

As the year went on, Rabbi Abenson and I built a friendship, and I began telling him what my views were, why I had them, and what I was on the brink of doing. We had many talks and he helped me overcome some of the hurdles I was struggling with. There are two terms I use, There are Real Rabbis and then there are Fake Rabbis. Majority of Rabbis fall under the later term. I never give the former term to anyone who hasn’t proven to me that they are sincere, kind, and are really there to help you, over a long duration of time. Rabbi Abenson is a Real Rabbi. Thanks to Rabbi Abenson I never used that one way ticket.

It took a lot of talks, and a lot of trust in Rabbi Abenson to start contemplating the possibility of going back to Yeshiva. Finally one day I said I’ll give it a shot. He said how the things I had been exposed too aren’t what it’s really like. Thanks to Rabbi Abenson I would have never gone to Israel, its thanks to him that I was able to experience a world of difference in positivity, and changing my outlook entirely forever.

Two years later: It has been an adventure a half! I had been in Israel for the past two years at Aish HaTorah, in a post high school program called Gesher. It has been incredible! I want to use this opportunity for me to give back. Anyone who feels they have given up trying to read hebrew or learn, please please reach out to Rabbi Abenson. The results are amazing!
