TLS & LPD’s ‘Click-it & Lick It’ program is back for the second year! It’s simple – wear a helmet and get a coupon for a free ice cream!
TLS recognized the need for increased awareness and safety in regards to helmet-wearing in Lakewood, so we decided to do something about it. But since summonses can’t be issued, we figured ice cream would do the trick.
Hence, ‘Click-it and Lick it’ was born – founded and sponsored by TLS.
Last year, hundreds of children received the free coupons.
In the coming days, patrol officers from the Lakewood Police Department will be given a bundle of gift cards like the ones pictured, and if they observe your child with a helmet, he or she will be receiving the card for a free kiddie ice cream at Sprinkles on Route 9. It’s that simple!
In addition to the positive reinforcement aspect of the program, TLS and Lakewood Police Chief Rob Lawson felt that the program will also increase the comfort level of children when approaching police officers to report a crime, suspicous behavior, or g-d forbid if the child is lost.
So get those helmets out, and you’ll be on your way to the ice cream store!
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS: This program is specifically being done in conjunction with the Lakewood Police Department for security and safety reasons. Cards will ONLY be given out by patrol officers in a MARKED police car. No private citizens whatsoever will be giving out these cards. Children should be told never to approach a stranger’s vehicle – even if he or she claims to be from the Law Enforcement community. If you see someone attempting to give a child the ice cream card, or any other items, please report it to the LPD & TLS immediately.
My kids always ride with helmets and they were extremely disappointed that last year not once did a police officer stop to give them an ice cream card. please make sure they visit all parts of town. thanks.
We had the same experience last year. My kids spoke to other kids in my neighborhood, and none of them got a card either. Maybe this year…
Maybe there is an age limit
to #3 what age would you think the limit is for? i have kids ages 3-9 wearing helmets, shouldn’t they qualify?
