Thousands of people are without of power in Lakewood and Toms River this afternoon, as temperatures hovered just below 100 degrees.
Most of the power outages are across the South end of Lakewood.
As of 6pm, the weather in Lakewood was over 95 degrees, and an Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 8pm.
The cause of the outage is unknown at this time, but Jersey Central power & Light says power is expected to be restored by 8:30pm.
Multiple traffic lights are out as well.

Welcome to the shtelil.
Add Jackson to the list for the second day in a row. No electricity from 10:30-9:30pm yesterday. Now again tonight.
Does anyone have any more info when power will be restored?
Now that it’s back on: Does anyone know what caused the outages?
To much electricity being pulled. Every ones air conditioners on full blast to over come this heat wave. Just to add to that. The electric vehicles are also playing a major role in overloading the power grids. The grids were not meant to power all the electric vehicles on super chargers. That as well puts a major strain on the grid.
It’s unbelievable that they can’t get their act together & upgrade their equipment. If their equipment is still 30 years old, we should be paying them like 30 years ago. Meanwhile, our electric bills go up & up, RE taxes go up and everything by them stays the same.
Someone needs to assess this because we’re being taken advantage of…
