Rescue Efforts Continue in Surfside – Rescuers are working around the clock to recover possible survivors and the bodies of victims from the site of the building collapse in Surfside, Florida. Rescue teams are on their ninth day of searches, and have so far recovered 22 bodies, with hopes of recovering people alive sadly dwindling. Rescue efforts had to be halted on Thursday over concerns that the remaining standing portion of the tower would collapse as well, and an order has been given to now demolish it, allowing teams to continue their efforts unabated. President Biden visited the site of the collapse on Thursday and met with family members of the missing, including Elisheva Cohen, a 12-year old girl whose father is missing and became known nationally for sitting near the site of the collapse reciting Tehillim.

Trump Org, Executive Indicted – Donald Trump’s company and his longtime finance chief, have been indicted on charges stemming from a New York investigation into the former president’s business dealings. The charges against the Trump Organization and the company’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, involve alleged tax violations related to benefits the company gave to top executives, possibly including use of apartments, cars and school tuition.

House Approves Select Committee for Jan. 6 –  The House voted Wednesday to create a select committee dedicated to investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection, in what will likely become a partisan fight over establishing the facts of the violent attack on the Capitol. Lawmakers voted largely along party lines, 222-190, with only two Republicans, Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, joining all Democrats to back the new committee.

Trump Visits Border – Former President Donald Trump visited the southern US border this week to see for himself the crisis that has unfolded there since Joe Biden became president and immigrants began pouring through illegally. Trump said that Biden’s incompetence was allowing the crisis to go on for so long, and said his own policies kept the borders secure. Trump also took credit for Vice President Kamala Harris visiting an area near the border, saying she was forced to go after he announced that he would be going.

US Leaves Afghan Airbase – The US military withdrew from the Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan after nearly 20 years, which was the epicenter of its fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The airfield was handed over to the Afghan National Security and Defense Force, but an American commander still retains control over all that happens at the base. President Biden has set September 11th of this year as the timeline to withdraw all US troops from war-torn Afghanistan, which has been occupied by American forces since the war against al-Qaeda began after the 9/11 attacks.

850K Jobs Added in June – The US economy added 850,000 jobs in the month of June, well outpacing the predicted 706,000 jobs economists had predicted. The unemployment rate, however, rose to 5.9%, higher than the 5.6% expected by economists. The jobless rate increase came even though the labor force participation rate was unchanged at 61.6%. Jobless claims also fell this week to 364,000, slowly nearing pre-pandemic average levels of 200,000 a week.

Dozens Dead in Major Heatwave – Dozens have been killed and hundreds hospitalized due to a record-setting heat wave that struck the Pacific Northwest this week, sending temperatures into unprecedented territory in areas in which many homes do not even have air conditioning. Temperatures in Oregon and Washington soared to well over 100 degrees, breaking their previous records, and putting the lives of millions of residents in jeopardy.
