Republicans Hold National Convention – The Republican National Committee held their convention this week in a mostly virtual format, with the exception of President Trump’s speech accepting the nomination for president. The four-day event was headlined by speakers such as Vice President Mike Pence and Melania Trump, who both made the argument that the United States is better off because of President Trump’s leadership over the past four years. The president accepted the Republican nomination on Thursday evening and unleashed a blistering attack on Joe Biden, warning Americans that “no one will be safe” if Biden becomes president. “This election will decide whether we protect law-abiding Americans, or whether we give free rein to violent anarchic agitators and criminals who threaten our citizens,” Trump said.

Hurricane Slams Southern US – Hurricane Laura, a massive Category 4 storm that was one of the strongest in history, slammed into Louisiana and Texas this week, causing widespread damage and flooding. Forecasters were concerned that Laura could cause am “unsurvivable” storm surge of over 30 feet in some areas, but those fears were thankfully unfounded. Still, the storm’s violent winds caused millions in damage, especially in Louisiana, and several people were killed, mostly from falling debris. Meteorologists are now eyeing another two storms in the Atlantic – Nana and Omar -that could potentially threaten the United States.

Riots Continue In Kenosha, Wisconsin – Rioters took the streets this week in Kenosha, Wisconsin, after a black man was shot multiple times in the back by police officers. Jacob Blake, the man who was shot, is reportedly in critical condition and is paralyzed from the waist down. Police say that Blake was reaching into his car when he was shot, and they later found a knife on the floor of the vehicle. A 17-year old police supporter shot and killed two individuals while they were protesting, and he is now facing murder charges. The National Guard has been brought in to help stop the rioting.

CDC Changes Coronavirus Testing Guidelines, Then Reverses – The director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Robert Redfield, reversed course this week after changing CDC guidelines for who should be tested for Covid-19. Early in the week, Redfield released new guidance which said that asymptomatic individuals need not be tested for the virus. But after outrage from many in the scientific and medical community who said that the illness could spread from asymptomatic people, Redfield undid the change.

FDA Approves Rapid Covid Test – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Abbott Laboratories’ 15-minute coronavirus test which could be a game-changer in the fight against the virus. The test, which costs just $5, has a demonstrated test accuracy of about 97%. The test is roughly the size of a credit card and can be administered by a trained professional using a nasal swab. The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it would be ordering 150 million of the rapid tests for use in the US.

FBI: No Evidence Of Coordinated VBM Fraud Attempt – FBI officials said this week that they had seen no evidence of a coordinated effort to defraud the US election system using mail-in ballots. The officials told reporters that while they expect a massive surge in mail-in voting this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were not aware of a “coordinated national voter fraud effort.” They added that it would be “extraordinarily difficult” for malicious actors to change the outcome of the election through mail-in voting fraud alone.
