Trump Delivers State Of The Union Address – After being postponed due to the 35-day partial government shutdown, President Trump addressed the nation in the annual State of the Union address on Tuesday evening to a joint session of Congress. While his speech was mostly bipartisan, focusing on concepts and issues that Republicans and Democrats agree to, President Trump also urged Congress to stand up to Iran and Venezuela, give peace with North Korea a chance, build a wall on the border with Mexico, ban late-term abortions, among a host of other policy agendas Democrats do not necessarily support.
Virginia Democrats Embroiled In Scandal – Virginia’s Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General have all been caught up in serious scandals jeopardizing their careers as well as Democrats’ viability in the state of Virginia. Governor Ralph Northam came under fire over pictures that surfaced of him donned in blackface several decades ago. First in line to become Governor should Northam resign would be. Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax who is being accused of assault by a woman, and in line after Fairfax is the state’s Attorney General Mark Herring who admitted this week to wearing blackface at a party in the 1980’s. Donning blackface, or makeup that makes a white person look black is considered racist because it dates back to the times of minstrel shows where blacks were mimicked, mocked, and portrayed negatively.
Inaugural Committee Faces Subpoena – Federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York (SDNY) have issued a subpoena to Trump’s inaugural committee, demanding all records related to vendors, donors, and possible benefits donors may have received in exchange for their monetary support. SDNY prosecutors are also investigating whether foreign nationals donated to the committee and whether donations were made under false identities. The SDNY investigation is not related to the Mueller probe.
Progressive Democrats Unveil ‘Green New Deal’ – Liberal Democrats this week unveiled their goals for a greener USA. Their goals include upgrading or replacing every building in the US, getting rid of air travel by making trains faster, more accessible and efficient, and decommissioning all nuclear plants within 10 years. The plans are so overly optimistic and unrealistic that even Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats leader in the House brushed away their suggestions. Pelosi also notably kept Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, the new socialist Democrat in Congress off a climate change committee.
Warren Caught Faking Ancestry Again – The Washington Post revealed this week that Massachusetts Senator and 2020 presidential contender Elizabeth Warren lied on her registration card to the State Bar of Texas, listing her ethnicity as being Native American. Warren has been dogged by her lies regarding her ancestry and has been mocked incessantly by President Trump who refers to her as Pocahontas. In an interview Wednesday, Warren apologized for her claims and said it was never used to get her into any position or to gain employment. It is not yet clear if and how her repeated ethnicity lies will impact her presidential ambitions.
