Trump Spars With London Mayor – President Trump paid a 3-day visit to the United Kingdom this week where he met with the royals, Prime Minister Theresa May, and many high ranking British officials. Trump said a trade deal with the UK could possibly be coming. But the most newsworthy part of his visit was the war of words between he and London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan. Prior to Trump’s visit, Khan called the president a “growing global threat” and said the red carpet should not be rolled out for Trump. In a tweet responding to Khan, Trump wrote that Khan was a “stone cold loser” who has done a terrible job as mayor of London, and was acting foolishly in attacking him.
Trump Attends 75th D-Day Anniversary Ceremony – On Thursday, President Trump attended a ceremony honoring the lives of soldiers who died on the beaches of Normandy during the Allied D-Day invasion of Europe in World War II. Speaking before gathered dignitaries, President Trump said he would uphold US alliances “forged in the heat of battle, tested in the trials of war, and proven in the blessings of peace.” He went on to heap praise upon US veterans who partook in the invasion, saying they not only beat Nazi Germany but also helped build the American century. Trump’s speech was so profound that even CNN’s Jim Acosta and MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, both vocal critics of the president, praised him for it.
US, Mexico Fail To Reach Deal To Avoid Tariffs – After President Trump said he would be imposing tariffs of 5% on all Mexican imports to the US, Mexican officials raced to start negotiations with the Americans to keep them from going into effect. Those efforts seem to have failed. On Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence said that no deal had been reached with Mexico and that the tariffs would be going into effect as planned on Monday, June 10. As of Friday morning, President Trump had not spoken to Mexican president Manuel Lopez Obrador regarding the tariffs.
Pelosi Wants Trump In Prison – After clashing with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler over advancing impeachment proceedings, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Democrats that although she is not in favor of impeachment at this time, she would like to see President Trump in prison. “I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,” said Pelosi, according to multiple officials present. In an interview following the revelation, Trump attacked Pelosi, calling her a “nasty, vindictive, horrible person” and said that the Mueller report was a “disaster.”
Coward Parkland Deputy Charged – Scott Peterson, the Florida deputy who hid while children were massacred during the Parkland high school shooting was arrested on 11 charges. The charges include negligence, child neglect, and perjury for lies he told about what happened during the shooting. Peterson never went into the school building to confront the shooter, and instructed police officers to stay away as 17 kids were being murdered inside. The charges carry with them a potential combined sentence of over 100 years in prison.
Jobs Target Missed – The US added 75,000 jobs in May, far below the 180,000 estimated by experts. The job numbers for April and May were also revised downwards. One good sign in the BLS jobs report was the U6 rate – considered to be the broadest measure of unemployment – which decreased to 7.1%, the lowest rate since late 2000.
