The Now Desperate Search In Riverhead Continues

Police are asking for help in locating theman in his sixties who left his home earlier this week and hasn’t been heard from since. As CBS 2′s John Slattery reports, one clue put the man’s last whereabouts in Riverhead, far from where he lives.

Susan Mayer says she hasn’t slept in two days, wondering what happened to her husband, reports CBS 2′s John Slattery.

“It’s a nightmare. I mean people don’t just disappear,” Mayer said. “This is TV stuff. People just don’t disappear into thin air.”

That’s what happened to her husband, 65-year-old Steven Mayer, a businessman who left his home in Great Neck Monday morning, leaving the front door open. He spoke to his office in Huntington to say he was on his way in, and mentioned he was on the LIE, a route he seldom took.

“We know that his last contact when reaching out was from Riverhead, based on triangulation of cell towers,” State Senator Craig Johnson told 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera.

“He didn’t get off the highway, he shot past his office for some reason, something is happening,” Mayer said.

Mayer says police were able to trace Steven’s final phone call Monday afternoon to a cell tower in Riverhead, and the number he called raises concerns about his mental health.

“I believe the last call was made to his deceased parents’ phone number,” Mayer said.

Steven Mayer is a former president of his synagogue in Great Neck, which has mobilized searches and printed posters.

Mayer is five-foot-eight and weighs about 190 pounds, with brown hair and glasses. He drives a gray 2010 Nissan Sentra with New York license plate EWN 4035. He’s been missing now for more than two days.

Mayer’s wife believes he may have had a stroke or may be suffering a form of dementia.
