Suspicious Item Prompts Response From Bomb Squad

PHOTOS & VIDEO [UPDATED 5:50PM] A suspicious item prompted the response of the bomb squad this afternoon. The item, lying at the intersection of Monmouth Ave and 2nd Street, appears to be a suitcase, an official says.

The Lakewood Fire Department and EMS responded to the scene as well.

The area is blocked off from 1st Street to 3rd Street, as they determine what the package contains.

The package is located near two schools.

UPDATE: The State Police bomb squad – with the assistance of a robot, determined the package to be non-hazardous (as reported in our News Alerts). It was an empty suitcase.

CIU units responded to the scene to collect the item.

  1. wow that was the most suspicious looking suitcase I have ever seen. did you see the way it was just lurking there? acting as if it was up to something no good?

  2. why don’t they take fingerprints & arrest a person that leaves items loose & also causes thousands of $$$$$$ to investigate crime scenes like this?

  3. well, let’s see….. i’ve seen baby strollers, shoes, books, etc. listed in the lost & found sections- maybe someone forgot his suitcase?

  4. just because they leave their suitcase on the side of the street is no reason to fingerprint it. if it was an actual device they would have taken it and destroyed it.WTG NJSP bomb, LFD, EMS & LPD Kudos

  5. why do you think there are so many advertisments on the radio lately from port authority about suspicious packages and the need to call it in. You are only a block from a large bus hub, seems to be getting closer.

Wake up and think bigger picture here, we are due for something and when it happens we will all act surprised. These people in Emergency services should be praised for what they do and give them the monies needed to protect each of us. maybe a 1 cent raise in the budget could do just that
