Survival Rates For Admissions Through Emergency Rooms Among Highest At 2 Area Hospitals

monmouth medical center dealPatients admitted through the emergency departments of Community Medical Center in Toms River and Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch have higher survival rates than those in other institutions for the 11 most typical ailments, according to a national survey that placed the two facilities within the nation’s top 5 percent of hospitals for emergency care. Only one other hospital in New Jersey received a similar rating: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton, according to the study.

HealthGrades, which provides independent health-care ratings of hospitals, physicians and nursing homes throughout the nation, examined more than five million Medicare records for patients admitted through emergency rooms at 4,907 hospitals from 2006 to 2008 and identified those facilities with the highest survival rates for the most common illnesses and ailments.

Some 225 hospitals nationwide and three in New Jersey received the excellence in emergency medicine awards from the agency. Both Monmouth and Community are part of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

The rating is based on risk-adjusted mortality outcomes for patients admitted through the emergency department for 11 of the most common life-threatening diagnoses among Medicare patients.

Comparing the group of hospitals in the top 5 percent with all others, the study found the top performers had a 39 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rate. The top hospitals also improved their outcomes from 2006 through 2008 at faster rates than other hospitals, according to a prepared release from Monmouth Medical Center. Read more in APP.

  1. This is not such a fair statistic bec each hospital has a different clientele for inStance MMC has a large pediatric dep that has a much higher survival rate JSMC has a much higher percentage of survival trauma patients that have a higher mortality rate than anyone else than other hospitals so how can the creator of this statistic just count up mortality rates and say look this place is better or worse
