Long Awaited Sunset & James Traffic Signal Goes Live Today

sunset james new lightIf you plan on driving through the intersection of Sunset Avenue and James Street today, be aware that the traffic signals are now active. The intersection just West of Route 9, which has a 45 MPH speed limit, has been the scene of numerous Motor Vehicle Accidents. So when passing through the intersection, look out or the red light. 1. there is traffic by this intersection for not more then 2 hrs a day. I hope the light wont be running the entire day, so that i dont have to wait for the light for ten minutes while there are no cars driving the other way.

  2. I am very happy about the light but like the posters above are wondering, what was the planning behind not having the entrance to the new shopping plaza not enter into the light??

And can someone from the LPD advise us how to avoid having cars who are trying to avoid the light race throuh our development?

  3. Oh and #3 don’t forget to take into account that the lovely people of this town cannot drive when you give your “professional” opinion.

  4. The reason for the driveway being away from the light is probably because most people will be going to rt9 they won’t have to wait for a light to leave the store. For the few that are making a left turn out they will have a long wait since they don’t have a light letting them out. I would like to know who paid to have James street widened to make room for the exit lane from the store. Knowing our township- they probably paid for it, to accommodate a developer!!!
And good luck to the Freedom/independence residents that will now have to wait 10 minutes to turn left from Freedom onto James. This shopping center is going to make it a nightmare! Same to people trying to turn left onto James from williams- that is already terrible during rush hour!

  5. Hey #1 just another example of our planning board at its finest!!!! I think it is great how far ahead they can plan… or not plan. Maybe some expert told them it would be OK that way and not be a traffic issue..

  6. The Towhship paid for it… TO GENERATE TAX REVENUE. You can either “accommodate a developer” or leave the land sit fallow. One choice generates tax revenue, the other does not.

  7. Hey sanjay you can make a right on red in this state and even put a right turn lane in …. never mind that would mean the planning board thought and planned … what was I thinking?

  8. to comment #13,

the developer would have built the mall regardless of the town paying for the extra lane. the tax revenue would have been generated regardless!!!! Don’t try to confuse people with the facts.

  9. #14- you are obviously not familiar with the location. The light is NOT by the exit of the center- its about 50 feet west. If someone wants to make a LEFT on James from the stores they will only be able to do so if the light is green and no cars are coming. If the light is red and there are 2 cars waiting at that red light they will not have room to turn- knowing Lakewood drivers, they will pull out and block James Eastbound!

  10. to comment #18,

Yes, isn’t it weird and unusual for them to do that. I mean usually the askonim in this town and the elected offcials are so concerned with the regular people.

  11. So basically what it comes down to is that the connected few which are getting all these favor$ are making Steve cut our police force which we ALL need! CUT the favors and we will have $ for the things the entire town needs! Selfish people!

  12. It is amasing that people will post comments as fact with no clue of the truth, and then others accept what they say as fact. First the Township did not pay for any road widening for the exit lane. The developer did. James street is a County Road, the Township does not widen County Roads, and the Lakewood Planning Board does not dictate where the entrance driveways are located on County roads. That was done by the County engineer based on a traffic study. It depends on a number of factors including the alignment and location of intersecting roads and the projected traffic flows. It is my opinion that the County engineer who is profesionaly educated, licensed and has over twenty years of experience is better suited to decide where the entrance is, rather than uninformed hostile bloggers. I suggest that before you make derogatory comments about the planning board, the town and the developers, you should find out the facts.

  13. Went by that traffic light several times today, and what did I see? People not stopping at the red light coming off Sunset, not once but twice. Never stopped.
