The second summit held in Vietnam between President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un fell apart overnight and the leaders meeting ended early and abruptly due to irreconcilable differences. Trump said North Korea wanted all sanctions lifted but only offered partial denuclearization. In a press conference following his meeting with Kim, Trump said that his relationship with the despot was “very strong” but that “it wasn’t the right time” to conduct the discussions. “Sometimes you have to walk. And this was just one of those times,” said Trump.

President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that although an agreement was unable to be reached, “real progress”had still been made. They said that North Korea had agreed to continue their moratorium on nuclear weapons tests and both sides are hoping to reach a deal on the nuclear weapons issue in the coming months.

The White House has not ruled out a third summit between Trump and Kim in the future. “No agreement was reached at this time, but their respective teams look forward to meeting in the future,” said White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement.

President Trump was also asked about Otto Warmbier, the American university student who was imprisoned, tortured, and killed by Kim’s regime. Trump unfortunately took the side of the dictator, saying “He felt very badly about it. He felt very badly. He tells me that he didn’t know about it and I will take him at his word.” Trump’s comments on North Korea’s human rights abuses echo his past support of other murderous world leaders, including Vladimir Putin following his denial of interference during the 2016 election and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who has denied involvement in the brutal killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

President Trump left Hanoi, Vietnam two hours earlier than expected, and will be returning to Washington, DC where he is facing a political storm with his former attorney and “fixer” Michael Cohen testifying against him before Congress.
