I am a very devoted mother who is extremely dedicated and makpid on my children’s chinuch. something happened yesterday that shook me to my core.
My oldest son, who is 12 years old and enrolled in one of the top schools in Lakewood, came home from yeshiva and told me that a classmate of his had come to school with a fruit-flavored e-cigarette that he had taken from his older brother. He then brought my son behind the school building and began smoking it! He told my son that it’s not a “real” cigarette, because, as was evident, it didn’t taste like a real cigarette, so what harm could there be?
My son protested, saying his father had warned him against smoking, but the boy was persistent and confident in his assertion that it wasn’t dangerous. He then pushed my son to choose which flavor he wanted to try. Watermelon, cherry, strawberry, you name it, this kid had it. My son says he took a quick, short puff and then ran away. The boy then called over another classmate to convince him to try vaping, and then younger boys in the school, telling them that vaping is considered “purim shtick” and is perfectly OK.
This is the story of just one dumb kid, but there’s a much larger issue here.
We see so many people, especially bochurim, walking around with e-cigarettes as if it’s something to be proud of. Study after study has shown that the vapor from e-cigs can seriously harm the body, and its long-term effects could be disastrous, but we simply don’t know it yet because vaping is too new.
Especially now, with Purim upon us, I am worried about how many children will be encouraged to take a puff of an e-cigarrette. Is this what you want your children to be doing with their Purim? Potentially throwing away their lives? I would hope not.
There are so many who are fooled by its apparent innocence; what harm could there be in something that tastes like a strawberry or watermelon? What’s the harm of inhaling a little water vapor? The fact that it tastes sweet and nice, unlike the acrid taste of tobacco just compounds the issue, because now young children think it’s safe. It is anything but safe! And our kids are being pulled into this, unaware of the its inherent dangers.
There’s no way we can stop everyone from vaping. It’s a reality we will have to live with until people learn the hard way that it is unsafe. What we can do is teach our children. Don’t just sweep the issue under the rug and hope they won’t find out about vapes or come into a situation where they are tempted to try it. They will find themselves in that situation, whether you like it or not.
It is our jobs as parents to educate. Teach your children, especially your sons, what vaping is and why it is so harmful. Explain how the companies that create these devices purposely put in nicotine to get you addicted to it and unable to stop even if you wanted to. Teach them that if they love themselves they would never try it and wouldn’t bother being friends with those who do.
Furthermore, it is in my opinion absolutely incumbent upon schools and yeshivos to crack down on these behaviors. Schools and yeshivos cannot only focus on the spiritual health of their talmidim, they must focus on their physical health too. To look the other way when children vape is not only a serious dereliction of duty, it could also result in those people who ignore the issue to have blood on their hands.
Please, do yourself and your children a favor. Educate them about vaping. Demand that their yeshivos take the issue of vaping seriously and help in cutting out this awful practice from our society.
Wishing all a freilichen Purim,
A worried mother.

Wow thank u for letting us be aware ty worry mom
We with you !
I guess you are not aware of the triangular trade that is going on among young boys, in all the “top” Lakewood schools too. Young bochurim convince their neighborhood boys to sell e-cigs to their friends, and everyone gets a commission. You have 10 years olds (maybe younger, but I don’t know personally) buying from 11 year olds who sell for 13 year olds etc. Their parents barely find out. Ask your school principal.
I hope you are just as concerned with the people taking your kid behind the school and doing worse things.
People have been vaping for over 10 years consistently, if there were to be adverse side effects they would have been experienced already. 🙂
Thank u for the open these
Subject it really disturbing!!!!!!!also in my boys yeshiva it going on !!!!
Bsd
What going onnnnnn ???i can’t believe we do nothing about it !!!!!!!!
Yesterday I scream on a big boy that spoke with my 10 year boy about it !!!!!next to my house it a חוצפה !!!!!!!!!
Get over it pal. Don’t know where you grew up, but everybody I know had Purim Cigarettes when we were 12-13 years old (or younger). And guess what? We all grew up and got married. And 99% of does don’t even smoke regularly. So the bigger deal you make of this, the more the kids resent it.
And I’m not referring to being forced by anyone, but like I said, kids are kids.
Demand answers from the schools. Maybe a little pressure
Welcome the real world. How do you think every kid in the world starts smoking? If you are just realizing this now, you are way too late.
The way to deal with this is to have ongoing and open communication with your kids. Don’t freak out when you hear what you’re kids tell you and let them know this stuff is normal. Kids will teach each other about all kinds of topics. Experiment with illicit stuff and push boundaries. Kids who are not afraid to communicate with their parents about these things have a much easier time dealing with it amd saying no.
I find it interesting that “we don’t know the long term effects yet of vaping” even though vaping was around for over 10 years already and we are all rushing into a new type of Covid vaccine that was around for 3 months even though a usual vaccine takes 10 years of testing.
Bad thinking. It’s a risk/benefit analysis. The risk to vaping vs the benefit of not vaping. We know the alternative to vaping is staying healthy. .
We also know the alternative to the vaccine which is illness and possible death. so the benefits of taking the vaccine vs the risk weigh heavily in favor of the vaccine while the risk of vaping weigh heavily in favor of not vaping. Simple straight unbiased logic.
in other words it’s a risk nbenefit analysis. the benefit o
faulty logic: “the alternative to the vaccine which is illness….”
Siimple Straight Unbiased Logic: “Not getting the vaccine does NOT cause illness”
Actually, since there are many effective treatments for covid now, the vaccine adverse events and deaths are actualy higher than the deaths from covid… CHeck it out on vaers and speak to people on the chevra kadisha in israel… Not your doctors who sit behingda desk looking at papers given to them by the people who make money from the vaccines…
Hello
I am glad you brought this up. This has been going on for the last 50 years or so. Only difference is that it is now an e cig. Ever since smoking has been known as dangerous, boys Yes from around 11-12 years old would sneak some into school before Purim. We have all been there done that. BH these days they are using e cigs that are just half the danger of cigarettes.
Many of these flavored “juices” are made in china and are not regulated. It is entirely possible that they have harmful, carcinogenic ingredients in the flavors. Almost all of them contain nicotine which is more addictive than heroin. The only use should be for adults over 21 who want to stop smoking, cutting down the nicotine step by step. For those adults only unflavored, organically grown FDA and independent lab certified tobacco liquids should be used. The liquids always contain some form of Glycol, vegetable or synthetic. While generally harmless, some people can have a serious allergic reaction to it. Under no circumstances should anyone vape a THC (marijuana) based product. They have been known to be deadly because they are only available on the black market. In any case it is best to not start smoking anything at any age.
I work as a health coach supporting smoking cessation. I would say that 99% of my clients picked up this awful habit in their early teens. Those who started with or switched to vaping are having a much harder time. They cannot believe how addictive vaping has been. Hatzlacha.
Im a Hanhalah member in a local cheder and this does not go on like a pyramid. Yes there are boys that get ecigs and smoke them and share them but you make it sound like theres a whole crime ring going on RELAX. boys will be boys and its going on for 50+ years when I was a boy we did it as well and its not as big an issue as you make it out to be
You are completely right.
Cigarettes are deadly as re-cigs and kudos to you for being public with this and making the public aware of this major issue.
בסד
It’s big deal u send your boy 12 years old to yhshiva and some boy מחטיא him !im paying fro him to learn תורה ויראת שמיים not to be Expose to public school material thank u very much worry mom !!!!for your Kindness we definitely be more aware thank you
It appears to me that the problem and naivety begins with the parents. Was was “top yeshiva “ trying to convey?
Top yeshiva , too bachor, top shidduch etc… and to than find oneself shocked to find some rot within !!! Therein lies the problem.
There is a much bigger issue that needs to be addressed. Selling any nicotine or tobacco products to minors is illegal. On top of that selling tobacco and nicotine products to the end user without a tobacco license is a criminal offense. The local police has been notified and will be be extra vigilant at finding the offenders who are selling these products to minors. I highly recommend that anyone involved in these illegal activities need to immediately stop what they are doing. This is not a matter of perspective. This is a matter of breaking the law.
Kudos to you that your son was open and told you about it.
