Submitted: Sakanas Nefashos

Submitted: “My daughter, who is severely allergic to all dairy, ate these chocolate covered rice cakes that says parve. After being transferred by Hatzolah to the hospital, the nurse looked at the package. It says may contain milk but doesn’t affect the parve status. It’s scary and not ok to advertise things like this. Serious Sakanos Nefashos.”

  1. Kashrus and allergies don’t equate.kashrus has different set of laws what deems it pareve and allergens have there set of rules.if one has allergies they should not rely on hashgacha to determine if it’s safe.in Kashrus there is bitul which if one has severe allergies will not be safe.same for vegan if the product is vegan but it is cooked in 100% dairy kailim it is stilled deemed vegan but for us it is dairy.moral of the story is do your research if you have alergies before blaming hashgacha

  2. Wow that’s sensitive, read
May u never have to deal with a life long, life threatening allergies
Many many many non Jewish companies put more info on packaging that helps with these things, can help avoid scary situations.
Ur words are true but we can help others with basic info, more clearly.

    • ummm… We do deal with life long, life threatening allergies.
How much clearer do you want the company to be than saying “May contain milk”? If someone has a life threatening allergy, this is the warning they should be looking for.
And the ‘many many many non Jewish companies put more info…’ is pure bluff and we all know it.
Sorry that the kid had an allergic reaction, but this is NOT the company’s fault.

      • U obviously don’t know what goes on in the real world, allergy info is often highlighted on the front, many many frum companies are decades behind in updating their packaging
Yes it def did say on this. And yes it is on the family and child to check and to be safe, but the frum world in lkwd particularly is very behind in understanding and helping with food allergies.

        • Sorry that this happened to the child and the mother didn’t read the label. That being said, this kind of warning is exactly what is written on nonjewish company labels. While as a whole there are companies that need to update their labels to include allergens, using this specific label as proof is to a problem with frum companies is false and counterproductive.

    • Oreos can be parve and someone can still get an allergic reaction from them. For someone who is sensitive to milk, all it can take is a single milk protein which is a tiny molecule. That size is not enough for it to be considered milchigs in Halacha.

    • Nobody holds that real oreos can be eaten with meat. DE means Dairy Equipment, which means “DON’T” eat with meat. It can be eaten after meat as the residue is batel. People who are allergic take extra precautions

  3. Does this person only understand Bidenese?

It literally warns people with allergies!!!

What else is the warning for???

(The parve vs milchig note is strictly there to clarify the Halachic status. Due to bitul rules, it’s not considered milchig.)

  4. It literally says on the package that it may contain milk. The halachos of kashrut and standards of allergens are different. Don’t blame the company for calling it parve (which it is) because you didn’t bother to read the label!

  5. I believe that most people who have to be careful about severe milk or nut allergies know that Pareve alone is not enough. You must carefully read the label as many clearly state they are made on machinery that contains milk or nuts .

It’s really not the company’s fault

  6. Refuah shelaima bkarov!! Hope she recovers fast and comes home very soon! I always feel bad for those highly allergic kids and their parents bec as much as you try there’s always those small cracks. Much hatzlacha, Just to understand though the package does state allergen information. And it sais may contain milk. I’m sure it was an oversight and your Probably checking evrything for ingredients. But I think they did right no?

  7. Joe,
Everyone with allergies can react to diff things and at diff times with varying levels of severity.
They can also be non reactive sometimes and have a G0d forbid bad reaction the next time.
If your kid had a scary episode, you’d feel the same way. People know very little Abt food allergies, apparently
All the comentors can be human, get off their high horses, and realize there is space here to get frum companies on board with more clear packaging for the sake of others safety

  8. Really?!
My wife is allergic to dairy and I’ve been aware of this allergen language for about as long as I’ve known her.
Hope did you make it this long without reading the allergen warnings?
The real issue is certain companies and stores that don’t care at all about proper allergen labeling.
There are certain brands that we do not but no matter what the label says.
I’m seriously considering writing an exposé and releasing to coincide with the next Kosherpalooza (formerly KosherFest).
The issue with doing so is that to avoid defamation lawsuits I would need to spend thousands of dollars on laboratory testing of the offending products.

  9. More and more kids are being diagnosed with life threatening food allergies each year and doctors don’t know why.
Time for frum schools and companies, and mother’s who sneak peanut products into their kids bags regardless of the school rules_to pay attention and take things seriously.
this can be a wake up call to everyone before a chas vshalom fatality

  10. When a company writes on a package that it may contain milk, then first of all you can’t sue them and second of all the company is not going to be super careful and make sure that drops of milk did not fall into the vat.
If an item says “it may contain dairy”, then probably they are not lying and probably it does contain small amounts of dairy.

  11. Something can contain milk and still be pareve. If you’re a parent of a child with serious allergies, as I am, you know to be careful about this. Not everything that says pareve is free of allergens and that’s exactly why the label on this product says may contain milk. They wrote that for YOU, mother of allergic child. This is not on the company, it’s on you. Lesson learned.

  12. Different hashgochos have different standards as to what they consider pareve. If someone in the family has a dairy allergy, they should learn the differences.

  13. As far as allergens go (highly allergic family), this product says all it needs to say. I sympathize with the mother. The scariest thing to happen to your own child is when they can’t breathe and you can’t do anything for them. That said, we do not eat certain brands because we are sensitive to them, whether it’s the dairy, nuts, peanuts or sesame. Those products bother one or more of us. And the warnings are there. And even when they’re not, we avoid those brands.

  14. I think the real issue is that companies list every allergen even when it’s not included which makes people think that the warnings are just to prevent lawsuits… But as a person with allergies I try to pretend as if… The hard part for me is having an allergy that’s not one of the top 8 so I doesn’t have to be disclosed. Thankfully my allergy responds well to oral meds and I’ve never been hospitalized but I’ve freaked my co-workers out pretty badly…

  15. Just a funny anecdote; we had a few kids here the other day and one said she was allergic to dairy so another kid said, are you allergic to also maykuntain or just to milk itself and all the kids were discussing whose allergic to maykuntain like its a product. Even kids today know that if it may contains u have to treat it like it does.
