Submitted: NJ Should Require Periodic Road Tests, Especially for Elderly Residents [Dashcam Video]

This close call happened to me on Vermont Avenue.

Being that the driver ended up literally feet from my car, I noticed it was an elderly driver – probably over 80 years old.

I think the law should require all drivers to take periodic road tests, and especially elderly residents.

  1. To make an older person take another road test is discrimination
There’s a reason the driver book warns that you need to be a defensive driver

  2. i am an elderly driver but i know my limitations and drive much less than i used to. i dont want to wait until my children take my keys away from me. i have long advocated for regular driving tests for drivers when they begin collecting social security, perhaps every 2 years thereafter. when i suggested that to my doctor, who is probably in that category, he was aghast. my neighbor’s children disabled her car when she shook so much that i was scared every time she got into her car. if the MVA would make the decision, children would not have to deal with anger felt by the parent towards the children for their so-called .chutzpah’

  3. Why are you discriminating against your elder? That’s something that i see every day with young people and sometimes even school busses.

  4. A driver like that, turning in front of an approaching car: it would be a big misva to have her driving skills retested not to metion siphoning the gas from the tank.

  5. I just looked up the following from the AAA: “Using the most recent available national data on driver crash involvement and driving exposure, the YOUNGEST drivers continue to have BY FAR the greatest driving risk.” Given this reality, I propose that all drivers through age 19 be given many more road tests..I think ONCE A MONTH is reasonable! All who agree say “AYE”. (Sarcasm intended)

  6. I was always pro having ALL driver’s take a road test when they renew their license. No discrimination is involved if everyone took a new test. I think a written test of the rules of the road would be advantageous as well. Now there is insurance discounts for people who take online review courses, which is a step in the right direction.

I”ve noticed that some people have no idea how to make a left turn at a traffic light, which endangers others. Periodically reviewing the rules of the road and taking a driver’s test with the renewal would really beH help.
