Submitted Kashrus PSA: Expired Certifications [UPDATED]

I’m at QuickChek at New Hampshire & Cedarbridge. I told the manager that the kosher certifications are all expired, besides for OU which means Coke only.

He ignored. I told him it’s deceiving and he should remove the certifications from the wall. He says everyone buys and it’s ok.

We tried calling HKA.

There’s a much bigger issue here, even if the certification wouldn’t be expired!

Read the papers carefully! Nowhere does it even say that the Hechsher is covering QuickChek. The HKA certification clearly states that it must have the logo printed on each bib, master box and bottle. Is anybody checking this or is everyone relying on the owner/worker’s statement?!

I even tried asking them if I can check myself and they flatly refused.

This is no different than walking into your local non-kosher restaurant and relying on the owner showing you a certification for JII Pizza to confirm that his food is kosher.

Ask your local Rov or Kashrus professional. I can’t imagine any of them would permit this.

Instead of making noise, maybe actually do some research, go to this site Slurpees – cRc Consumer Kosher Slurpees Slurpees Everywhere, Nor Any Drop To Drink? – cRc Consumer Kosher
This is from the crc article about slurpees (read it here

  1. Best Case Scenario –Ask your local franchise to seek certification on their Slurpee machines. This way, the kosher agency personally supervises all ingredients, and ensures that what’s in the back of the store is oh-so-thrillingly oozing out into the monster cups. They will also make certain that no non-kosher (and in some communities –no dairy) syrups will even enter the store.
  2. Second Best Choice –Before purchasing the Slurpee, ask to see the actual flavor boxes that feed the machines. If they check out all right, you should feel 100% confident buying and slurping them.
  3. Final Choice –Continue as status quo. You have good reason to slurp worry-free, since there is very little chance that there is anything in the machines other than what is portrayed on the genuine Coke or other brand-name signs. Remember, we have also established that the machines are Halachically acceptable.

Please note that this is only for Slurpees®, which is a specific product and supplier
What’s sold in quick check is not the brand name slurpee, nor does it portend to be.

So after 120 when you get upstairs they’ll look at you and they’ll say well, we can’t decide if you should go to gehenom. Maybe you should go to gehenom? We’re thinking whether you should go to gehenom? Yeah you should probably go to gehenom!

It’s time to become educated consumers! Enough excuses!

Did you ask to see the syrup to see the date it was produced? If it was made prior to the expiration of the certification there is no problem

One always needs to check the Kashrus certificate where ever you go. Including Jewish owned stores.

I stopped buying these things from 7-11, quickcheck a few years ago. Lately, I wouldn’t trust any of these employees. They have zero integrity and just want to finish work to get back to their video games. They could care less, who knows what syrup they put in.

You’re on the right track.

How do we know for sure that the coke is ok and also not played around with. If they can change the syrup for that to. From what I understand the only kosher slurpees are in the 711. I am wonder if that means all 7-11 or just the ones on route 9 in Lakewood.

I’m sorry to tell you, but this certificate is completely and utterly worthless for this location.

It’s about time that people stop being ignorant by choice and start listening to the Kashrus Professionals who are trying to guide them on the right path.

The kosher certificate has on it the name of the company certified, any brand names associated with what is being certified, product names of what is being certified, and more importantly the name and address of the location that is being certified. If the certificate has an address of Coca-Cola Boulevard in Atlanta, Georgia, the certificate is utterly WORTHLESS for a Quick Check in Lakewood!

If you really want to know if your frozen drink is kosher, the truth is, you should go in the back of the store and see what is connected. Based on what is connected, if it is one of the kosher flavors, then you can enjoy.

It’s time for the consumers to stop being ignorant by choice. Enough with the boych svoras and “Boych Svora K” kashrus. Get your head out of the sand!

I urge all kosher consumers to sign up to wws.kashrusawareness.com, a joint effort of AKO and many organizations. Become educated! Don’t choose ignorance because after 120, it’s not a good excuse!

For the life of me, I don’t understand why anyone would thumbs down what I said.

Probably not an educated consumer, or a consumer that doesn’t want to be educated. It’s better to be status quote and stupid.

Many years ago, we were told by a well known posek in town that Quickchek slurpies are a problem

Many frum owned and operated stores in Lakewood have Slurpee style drinks. Much better option!
