Study: Covid-19 Vaccines May Not Work As Well If You’re Obese

Being overweight is dangerous for a long list of reasons, from increased risk for heart disease to an elevated risk of stroke and developing diabetes. Now, researchers say there is another reason to drop those extra pounds: the Covid-19 vaccines might not work as well if you’re obese.

According to a study conducted by Italian scientists, obese people created only half the amount of antibodies that regular-weight individuals’ immune systems produced when injected with a vaccine.

While it isn’t clear exactly why this is, researchers suggest that extra weight, which causes long-term inflammation inside the body, hampers the immune system and prevents it from making high levels of antibodies. “The constant state of low-grade inflammation, present in overweight people, can weaken some immune responses, including those launched by T cells, which can directly kill infected cells,” the researchers wrote.

Health officials have already been urging people to lose extra weight, as obesity is a significant factor in severe illness and death from Covid-19. Specifically, people with a body mass index, better known as BMI, over 30 are particularly at a higher risk for serious complications.

The study’s authors noted that if further studies show that obese individuals do not react as well to the Covid-19 jabs, it is possible that it would be beneficial to inject them with an extra dose of the vaccine.

  1. Next they’re gonna say it doesn’t work well for someone with underlying health issues….bottom line it doesn’t work. Doesn’t prevent you from catching or spreading covid and as they’ve said you still need a mask and social distancing! So what exactly is the point? $$ in the big guys pockets.

  2. Firstly- it does prevent against catching Covid. My child quarantined at a family member who never had Covid but had both vaccines. The family member didn’t get sick despite having lots of close exposure. We were also closely exposed to my child after one vaccine and also stayed healthy. Additionally, the vaccine is meant to prevent SERIOUS illness, so even if you can both catch and spread it, hopefully it will mitigate the effects of the illness. So unless you have facts displaying the opposite — many ppl who have been vaccinated fully, and became seriously ill from Covid, then you cannot speak regarding vaccine efficacy.

  3. You sound so educated, and so well informed.
Perhaps it’s time that you should live up to your screen name, and start using your brain.

  4. @chana — I hope this doesnt happen, but are you going to update this post if either you or the other person come down with covid shortly? Your story doesn’t prove that much. There are many people, spouses included who were NOT vaccinated when their better half or roomate had severencovid and also didn’t come down with it. We will know with time if they actually work or not…. For now its just conjecture…

  5. I’m sick and tired of hearing what these supposed scientists have to say. For the last many many months we’ve been hearing that we should get vaccinated if we’re overweight and we have all sorts of other issues. Now they’re going to come and give us this garbage?!?

I say they’re full of it. They have no idea what they’re talking about and they’re making it up as they go along. Hopefully the vaccine works and it will be working only because the companies that made them did a good job. It will have nothing to do with all of these drive-by geniuses who have something to add every few weeks.

    • science has always been a fluid thing, changing as things are investigated or understood better. That’s why I can’t fathom why people keep saying I’m taking the vaccine because “I trust”. You trust what? The real data for this vaccine is only STARTING to come out (half of it is being covered up, so it’s slower than usual with all the lies). Scientists and doctors have flip-floped on many topic and issues over the years…. Time to trust Hashem …. and take the safer more effective methods like ivermecting and D as hishtadlus
