Department of Public Works Director Patrick Donnelly provided TLS with the following storm update.
As of now, the heaviest snow will fold in between 3-6 pm as we have been very lucky to stay within the mix line. See the note below for a small bit of relief for the downed tree and wire issues late tonight.
8.0 – 13.0″ 45% I believe we are still closer to the lower amount.
End Time ***Thursday 2:00 AM – 5:00 AM.
So far, we’ve seen an inch or two on colder surfaces from yesterday to today, however, a lack of intensity here at noon-time has led to almost all wet paved surfaces with little to no coverage. The issue is that the heavier snow has been just west, and we think this is still going to be the case for a few more hours. As the coastal low tightens up, we will see snow fill in across our area and any mixing (because it got light) ends.
Things are delayed, but we do anticipate getting 1-2″ per hour rates that become frequent mid/late afternoon through the evening. This will lead to widespread coverage, including pavements. Total-wise, we still see a significant snowfall, however, the full amounts seen on colder surfaces/grasses does not all occur on pavements. One other note, the snow trends to be a little drier later in the storm and can lead to a bit more blowing/drifting, but lower the amount of downed trees and power lines.
Wed Night:
Snow is heavy at times in the evening. It gradually becomes lighter overnight and ends 2-5 AM. Mostly cloudy and breezy. 4.0 – 8.0″ of Snow (storm total: 8-13″). Watch for freeze-up of slush / wet areas. Low: 27 – 31 | NW winds 10-20 mph, gusts 30-35
Thanks for the update. is there anyone at the BOE that can explain why school was cancelled. I’m sure all our DPW and BOE employees realized this morning that it is ludicrous to cancel school when the roads are clear and perfectly passable. Many of us are wondering what the protocol for these circumstances are.
Anyone at BOE can explain- Nevius ended at the begining of bayis sheini.
so far a nothingburger.
I want to strangle someone
Again these storms are scams please stop the madness making everyone crazy
Stop listening to the news allowing yourself to get crazy…
Better safe than sorry. They are not God they can only try their best to make the best decision with the information they have. Thank u for the update!
absolutely crazy. From now on, when there is no storm at the start of school, school should start and then get cancelled when it starts getting heavy not raining!!!!!
Sure – makes a lot of sense. Hundreds of buses stuck on the road for hours during a massive snowstorm.
it’s very hard to cancel school early. parents aren’t prepared, they went to work. buses are always a problem. better safe than sorry
#snowgate
people people people – take a chill pill O! M! G!
We all know the sayings;
Better safe then sorry
ayzehu Chochom……
An ounce of prevention……
Please, please, please take a deep breath. The weather predictors are not G-D. They can only share with us what they see based on the weather patterns they are getting. Instead of complaining how about we just appreciate that the good Lord had some mercy on us (again) and as we are so busy with our Pesach preparations we are saved from a crippling storm. Why must we look with a negative eye? Why can’t we just look with the positive eye?
There is another thread about making up a day of school and what not – oy vey!!!!!! Don’t we realize everything comes from the Almighty? Even a day off of school? Even a day less of work which for some means a day less of pay? Do you really think you are not going to make all the money you are destined to make this year because there is or is not a snow day?
We have got to all chill out. Relax a little. Calm down a bit. Get a grip. Stop complaining and start being happy – happy for you, happy for your kids, happy for the Rabbeim and teachers, happy for the bus drivers, happy for the weather people, happy for the opportunity to have a different day then expected. you know why? Because G-D himself chose to give you this type of a day!!!!!!
What a waisted day. Kids missing school. People afraid to go out.
Ridiculous.
yesterday afternoon the roads were treacherous! Would you really want
your children on school buses in such conditions? It was thought that the
snow, which became heavy around 2:30, would have started earlier making driving conditions dangerous. Thank you BOE for thinking of the
safety of the students!
It’s one thing if public schools are cancelled, since Lakewood Public schools are just copying what the nearby schools are doing.
But with regard to Yeshivas, especially with Pesach around the corner, why does the LATA think that they need to copy the public schools? Why do we always need to copy the public schools. Is there a secret clause with the drivers and with Jay’s that if their drivers get off for public schools, (therefore missing half of their runs), that they can just have the day off?
Where I grew up, my school had their own busses, and this never would have happened. I’m sure that Yeshivas that have their own busses now did not have off today.
Its time to put pressure on LSTA and especially Jays and the other companies that even if public schools are closed, as long as the private schools want to be open they must provide busses, and they must have that made clear to their drivers.
If you get up at 6 and see the place snow covered, cancel then. But if that’s not the case (like today) they need to have their drivers ready to work, even if it means only doing half their routes since public schools are closed.
There was regular trash and recycle pickup on the South Side of the Lake.
So happy!
Thank you DPW!
Thank You , Oy Vay Says ……. bless you for sharing your Attitude of Gratitude. An inspiration and also my thinking of choice. I couldn’t agree with you more. Blessings.
To Yaakov, think of the bus drivers who have to come from out of town to get to work, like me. Better safe than sorry
just wanted to take a moment to thank the hard working
employees in the DPW for doing a hero’s job in the storm and every day. An extra special thanks to Director Donnelly!!!! Lakewood is lucky to have you!!!
What about the safety for the children and the bus drivers. Buses are not easy to stop as to a car and on ice for get about it and don’t. Talk about Jays he has drivers from all over NJ what about there safety you made the kids deal with it because you don’t. Want them home
This was ridiculous, and guess what, I am sure there wont be school tomorrow as well, . As for the buses, I am sure most parents would have gladly driven there kids to school, I would of taken all my neighbors kids as well, instead of having them walking and running in and out of my house all day. The only person who showed up to my children’s school today was the administrator, who kept calling me for tuition, the good thing was i kept telling him, i cant hear you there are lot’s of kids running around..
For all you doubters look outside. It’s not yeshivish to deny the weather
