Finally! Hopefully this enhances awareness in the community.

I wrote letters to The Lakewood Scoop years ago (that they never published) pointing out that many of the frum local liquor stores sell beers of questionable kashrus status. The Star-K and CRC have lists on their websites of acceptable and not acceptable beers. Local places sell it all. I’ve asked store managers why they carry beers that are not acceptable according to Star-K/CRC and was told “it’s the customer’s responsibility to check for themselves”.

Unfortunately, customers assume that whatever is on the shelf must be acceptable. I’ve asked dozens of customers who were shocked that they’ve been purchasing questionable beers out of the assumption that the store would only sell Kosher stuff. There are so many beers (regular/craft/IPA/etc.) out there with good hechsherim that there’s no reason to buy anything else.

The stores DO NOT have a hechsher themselves and therefore there is no oversight.

What about the liquor that is sold in the local stores? Can I assume that if it’s in the store it must be good?
