Statement from Lakewood Fire Department on Wildfire

Lakewood Fire Department Fire Chief Jonathan Yahr this morning released the following information regarding yesterday’s wildfire.

On March 14th, 2021, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Lakewood Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call to 5 Airport Road in reference to a Brush Fire.

On arrival the Fire Department was met with a fast-moving Brush Fire being fueled by the dry weather and windy conditions.

The Fire Department immediately called for the NJ State Forest Fire and its Forest Fire task force to respond.

While conducting its initial size-up, the Fire Department found an office building at 150 Airport Road on fire and immediately upgraded the response to a 2nd alarm and then a 3rd alarm, which brings in all off-duty firefighters and our mutual aid partners from the surrounding towns in Ocean and Monmouth County. While battling the structure fire our mutual aid partners along with Lakewood Fire department units assisted with structural protection as the NJ State Forest Fire Task Force worked to try to contain the fire. The fire subsequently leaped over the Garden State Parkway into the wildland in Brick Township and damaged some homes there.

At this time, the fire is being contained by the NJ State Forest Fire Service and there is no immediate danger to the public. However, the public should be aware of their surroundings at all times and if they feel they are in any sort of danger, they should call 9-1-1 immediately. Forest Fire crews will be out all day today and into tonight and tomorrow working to contain the fire.

The public is asked to stay out of the woods for the next few days as the fire can change direction at any time from the strong winds.

The Lakewood Fire Department remains on high alert and is asking the public to heed the warnings of police and fire personnel and give the crews the space they need and to slow down and move over if they see any crews working near roadways. The Red Flag warning remains in effect until 5:00 p.m. tonight and all outdoor fires are prohibited and discarding of smoking materials should be done appropriately.
