Statement from Denise Gregory, candidate for Lakewood Fire Commissioner

lfdI’ve been asked by friends and neighbors why I am running for Fire Commissioner. After a 30-year connection to Lakewood, the answer is really quite simple. Lakewood is my hometown and I want to work to keep all residents of Lakewood safe. That is not to say our current board is not doing so. Rather, I think my strong financial background in both the corporate and not-for-profit fields for the past 35 years will be an asset to the board.

I believe if we show a continued commitment to a combined career and volunteer firefighting force, we can provide residents effective and safe protection and keep costs to taxpayers as low as possible. None of us wants to increase our taxes unnecessarily. Volunteer enrollment is up – we can continue that trend and not jeopardize safety. Our volunteer firefighters should be supported with the necessary gear, equipment and training to keep them (and us) safe.

Our population and density is changing almost daily. We must ensure that the various areas of Lakewood continue to have timely response coverage by the appropriate placement of Fire Department facilities. New development must accommodate appropriate access for emergency equipment. Lastly, the Commission, while operating independently, must provide clear communications with themselves, career and volunteer firefighters, businesses and residents alike. If elected, I will do my best to achieve these goals. Thank you for your support of our Fire Commission and our hardworking firefighters!

Denise Gregory, MBA, CNPM
