Statement from Avi Lieber, Candidate for Lakewood Fire Commissioner

avi lieber tlsBeing a Fire Commissioner comes with responsibilities that can not be taken lightly. Many people have asked me “what does a fire commissioner do”? Here is the mission statement from their website…

“The Fire Commissioners of the Lakewood Fire District are the translators of the Fire District’s overall commitment to excellence through the establishment as well as strict adherence to high standards of performance.”

This is obviously not an easy task. I believe the Lakewood Fire District is doing a phenomenal job. Here are a few items that can make it even better.

-Enable top of the line training that would certainly improve and enhance the department.

-As opposed to hiring many more paid firefighters (which would end up costing the tax payers a pretty penny), I would like to recruit more volunteers for the department since Lakewood is growing exponentially.

-Utilize fire dept properties in a more efficient way.

-Make sure there are no special interest groups, the presence of which only hinder a smoother operation.

These are only a few items that come to mind. With everyone’s cooperation we will succeed in making the quality of life for Lakewood better and safer for all it’s residents.

-Avi Lieber

  1. Mr. Lieber, and the other candidates for office:
Instead of telling what you want to do for both the volunteer and career branches how about explaining why you feel the way you do and how do you plan to implement your programs.
How do you plan to recruit more volunteers when intense drives over the past few years have failed to fill company rolls? This a national problem, not just Lakewood’s.
With an exploding population and a lack of volunteers how can you not expand the paid department, especially when many feel it is under staffed now?
How are the fire department properties underutilized?
    What special interest groups?
Many department members I have spoken to have no idea who ANY of the people running for the board are or what their positions are.
As far as I know not one candidate has appeared before any of the six companies to explain their positions. The only contacts have come at fires which seems have become a pre election tradition.
The members of the board put in a lot of time making decisions that affect not only the tax rate but ones that could ultimately affect the lives of both the town’s citizens and the men and women in the fire department. The candidates, ALL of them, should make clear their positions and how they plan to implement them so the voters can make intelligent decisions in filling these important positions.

  2. Mr monitor: Your bias is showing, I thought my request for clarity from all the candidates, not just Mr Lieber , was not unreasonable especially when coming from a 3rd generation ,50 year member of the department.

  3. Mr. Lieber is a wonderful choice for Fire Commissioner. He is very intelligent, resourceful and knows the ins and outs of volunteer work. He cares about everyone and does not have any agenda besides for doing what is best for the entire community. Everyone should stand behind this great man. he is a real caring Mensch.
