State Workers Union Approves Furlough Deal

Members of New Jersey’s largest public employee union have ratified a revised contract agreement that defers a pay raise and calls for 10 unpaid furlough days in exchange for a promise of no layoffs. The Communications Workers of America announced the vote Tuesday, saying nearly 69 percent of those voting approved the deal. The Corzine administration had sought the concessions, saying they will save more than $300 in the 2010 budget. In exchange for the pledge of no layoffs through December 2010 workers will be able to accrue up to seven paid leave days they can use after June 30, 2010. Corzine called the ratification “an important achievement,” but Republican critics have said it unwisely defers costs to future years. AP.
