Smoke Alarm Safety Alert

By Ron Benvenisti. It has been reported that some Universal Security Instruments battery powered alarms may have been installed without proper activation and testing.

Universal Security Instruments issued a recall for its battery-powered smoke detectors because a misaligned internal switch can cause the alarms to fail to activate during a fire.

The company has received 134 reports of failure to properly activate during installation.

The company is asking consumers to immediately test their smoke detector to determine if they activate appropriately.

To test the smoke detector, press the “Test” button to determine if it is operating properly. If the alarm makes a sound, no further action is necessary.

If smoke alarm does not sound during the test, contact Universal Security for a replacement.

This recall involves Universal Security Instruments 10-year battery-operated ionization smoke and fire alarms with model numbers MI3050S and MI3050SB and with date codes between 2015JAN19 through 2016JUL11.
