Singer, Kean & Thomson Criticize State Board For Promoting Agenda That Is Damaging Public Education & Eroding Parental Rights

Senator Robert Singer, Assemblyman Sean Kean, and Assemblyman Ned Thomson (R-Monmouth/Ocean) sent a letter to the State Board of Education expressing their concerns about the proposed changes being considered to N.J.A.C. 6A:7, Managing for Equality and Equity in Education. This section of rules guarantees each student equal access to all educational programs, services and benefits of the school district.

As part of the current changes, the Department wants to eliminate gendered nouns and pronouns and delete the word “equality” throughout the chapter.

“We are very concerned that these changes are simply promoting an ideology and will not ensure equal treatment and educational services for all students,” remarked Senator Robert Singer.

The legislators also asked the Board to focus their energies on real educational problems such as addressing the learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic and reducing the achievement gap for all New Jersey students.

“The Department of Education said that students lost about seven years of progress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than promoting a certain ideology, the State Board should be looking at ways to ensure all children learn the skills they need to thrive as productive members of society,” added Asm. Sean Kean.

In addition, the legislators ask if changes to the statewide education curriculum should be decided by the State Board of Education or deliberated by the Legislature.

“The decision to make substantial changes such as the ones proposed by the State Board of Education should be left to the elected representatives in the Legislature,” said Asm. Ned Thomson. “While the current administration may not feel parental rights are a priority, parents should at the very least be able to vote for the people who make public policy decisions that affect their children.”

The State Board of Education will be deciding on the amendments and changes to N.J.A.C. 6A:7 on Wednesday, August 2.
