Should The U.S. Replace the Dollar Bill With a $1 Coin?

Officials with the Government Accountability Office have completed a report that the Government could save $4.4 billion over the next 30 years by doing away with dollar bills, and replacing them with $1 coins instead

In Canada several years ago, the $1 and $2 bills were replaced by ‘Loonies’ and ‘Toonies’. The penny was recently removed from the currency altogether, because the metal cost the Government more than the worth of the penny.

Do you think it’s a good idea to replace the dollar bill with a coin?

  1. Hi. I thinlk they should keep the dollar bill. Once they change it to a coin they will start with the $5 And $10 before you know it. Not only that what will the people do that use the williamsburg bus in brooklyn do. it actualy takes $1 bills unlike the city buses that takes only coins and metro cards.

  2. It was tried already.
Congress passed the PRESIDENTIAL $1 COIN ACT OF 2005. You can google for more info. It failed for two reasons. The first one being the primary reason.

    1. As # 5 mentioned it would be impossible to implement without gradually pulling the bills out of the economy thus forcing people to use the coins.

    2. For those who are aware of the dansdeals phenomena. The millions of coins that were deposited at banks were sent right back to the mint.

It was an expensive program that was poorly implemented and is just another example of our government’s inability to execute efficiently and their gross incompetence in spending taxpayer money.

  3. I’m not sure I understand why this is better. Aren’t coins more inconvenient to carry around? Could someone explain the benefit of having a $1 coin?

  4. we are 16 trillion dollars in debt and this is what people are worried about REALLY!!!!!!! if they keep spending our tax dollars liat the rate we wont have to worry because we will be BANKRUPT!!!!!

  5. To #16. “Could someone explain the benefit of having a $1 coin?” They say that making a coin is cheaper than paper bill so it will save them money. Thats why i say it is a bad ide as once they do the $1 the will eventualy do the same to the $5 and $10 regardless if it is inconvenient to carry around. they wont be selling wallets anymore they will be selling change purses. get it while they are cheap.

  6. good morning america! just bc it;s something ur not USED to doesn’t mean it’s not smart and that it won’t grow on u….if it’ll save the country $ (which they say it will) then just go for it- and quit ur whining!
