Sherrifs Officers Who Chased Suspect On Foot Should Have Notified Local Authorities, Police Say

sheriff-tlsOcean County Sheriffs Officers who entered Lakewood and chased a wanted man with their guns drawn, should have notified local authorities before entering, according to a statement from Police Chief Rob Lawson. “It’s customary and protocol for Law Enforcement agencies going into another town to take police action, to notify the jurisdiction”, Police Chief Rob Lawson told TLS, although not commenting on this particular incident.

An eye-witness and other sources tell TLS, while Sheriffs Officers were struggling with a suspect after chasing him through a residential area, they told bystanders to call the police and notify them that they are requesting backup.

Lakewood Police reportedly received several calls on the incident, with at least one of those calls coming from a bystander who believed a gunman was chasing another man.

Lakewood Police arrived and drew their guns as well and together tackled the suspect, witnesses say.

Asked why the Sheriffs Officer didn’t communicate directly with local police prior to the pursuit which could have had deadly consequences, the Sheriffs officer responded that he was unsure where exactly he was, and his vehicle was not close by.

One of the Sheriffs Officers walked away with a scratched up arm. TLS-CCP/TLS-KR/TLS-CL.

  1. This is how cops get killed by friendly fire. In NY a plainclothes cop drew his gun and pointed it at a suspect the first arriving officer shot him dead because he failed to identify himself appropriately. The cop was not charged with misconduct

  2. This is not the first, second or even third time that sheriff officers or members of the prosecutors office have come into Lakewood with their guns drawns and failed to notify LPD.

  3. if lakewood had enough cops on the road maybe lakewood wouldnt need help from other towns, lakewood is in dyer need of more cops.

  4. The Sheriff’s Dept. was trying to arrest someone on a warrant. They requested help, albeit tardily, from Lakewood, not the other way around. It was not necessary to disparage the LPD. (And it’s ‘dire’ not ‘dyer’.)

  5. Ocean county sheriff dept has more power then lpd so lpd cant say a word it like when state pd comes to lakewood lpd has to step down and cant say a word about it

  6. #6 and #7, you are both wrong. The State Police can go anywhere in the state but they ALWAYS give Lakewood the courtesy of notifying them when they are patroling in the area.

  7. It is true when state police comes they come in a pack and they maintain radio communication with each other not LPD They have no prejudice over who they stop i think LPD does!!!!!

  8. Responding to #4.

The writer didnot write anything bad about LPD. He is saying they need more staff. As far as I am concerned its more important to catch a criminal than to follow this kind of protocol.
