She May Be Sick, But Her Legacy Lives On

[COMMUNICATED] The room is silent, except for the unearthly beep of the heart monitor. The nurse shuffles in and out, organizing medications. Rabbi Klein, a man in his 60s with kind eyes and a warm smile, comes to his wife’s bedside to say ‘Good morning.’ Esther looks in his direction. It is all she can offer him in return. ALS has robbed her of her ability to move her body. This is their daily ritual.
What Esther does not know, is that her husband and their 8 children have run out of the means to continue to treatments which keep her alive. After her transition from ‘normal’ mother of a large family, to disabled, to paralyzed, it would be more than she could bear. Her body is a prison, but her mind and soul burn bright within.

Rabbi Klein opened an emergency fund on The Chesed Fund this week, in a desperate attempt to raise money to cover Esther’s treatments. The case is verified by both The Chesed Fund, and tzedaka organization Kupat Ha’Ir.

Rabbi Klein appeals to the Jewish People as a whole during a time which is meant to be particularly auspicious for saving lives: “I am turning to you, merciful Jews, in the month of mercy and selichos, when each one of us surely wants merits before the Day of Judgement. Please, do not stand by.”

Indeed, the week before Rosh Hashana is a time when Jews around the world are compelled to not merely “stand by.” The Klein family are praying that this extra dose of inspiration will help them to save Esther’s life. At this point, it is their only hope.
