The New Jersey State Senate has passed legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) urging New Jersey residents who are 50 and older to get vaccinated for shingles.
“Shingles is a very painful condition, and it carries serious risks, particularly for those of an advanced age, but it can still impact people who are younger,” Senator Singer explained. “The most effective way to reduce your risk is to get vaccinated, plain and simple. I urge the 9 million NJ residents who are over 50 to get vaccinated now. The shingles vaccine is virtually painless, safe, and widely-available. There is no reason to suffer.”
One in three Americans over the age of 60 will get shingles, according to the CDC.
Shingles is a painful rash caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which remains dormant in the body even after recovery from chickenpox.
The CDC also reported that shingles is becoming more common in the U.S., emphasizing the need for Senator Singer’s legislation to raise awareness of the benefits of getting vaccinated.
Senator Singer’s resolution, SR-70, cleared the State Senate on Dec. 17, 2018.
9 million people times $200 per shot. Is their concern for our health the only reason, or is some one going to make a lot of money.
How effective is the shot, it is 90% effective, that means 10% of the 1/3 of the people it won’t work for. 2/3 of the people getting the shot won’t get shingles anyway.
Great idea but unfortunately the Shingles vaccine shot is not available. There is a wait list at local pharmacies. Not enough vaccines were produced by the drug company. Resolution or not, one can not get it if there is none. I put my name on 2 months ago and still have not been called.
Since the varicella shots are being given the shingles is at a rise! That is another reason not to give the varicella vaccine. When your children get chicken pox it helps with the adults immunity to shingles!
Actually, shingles is reactivated chicken pox. Confused, go check your medical facts, google it.
Shingles is reactivated chicken pox. However, in the pre-varicella-vaccine era, when children got chicken pox, the immunity of the adults around them was boosted, which protected them from getting shingles.
Google it.
As a person who just got over shingles, I would like to chime in. I had chicken pox as a kid – no shot and I still got shingles.
As explained earlier, in the pre-varicella-vaccine era, you may have avoided this pain, as your immunity from the chicken pox you had as a kid, would have been boosted now and then over the years, when children in your community got chicken pox. Since chicken pox is now rare due to the varicella vaccine, shingles in adults (even young adults) is becoming more common, as their immunity from chicken pox (either from the actual disease or from the varicella vaccine) wanes.
Yes that is because you were not being constantly exposed to chicken pox because kids nowadays don’t get chicken pox. when the people around you have chicken pox it wakes up your immune system just as a booster would.
no more chicken pox
so no more natural boosters
hence the rise in shingles.
🙁 sad
It’s so hard to believe that most peo actually give the varicella vaccine! Doesn’t everybody know chicken pox isn’t dangerous?? I mean common u can ask any adult! We all got it!
Why not let you’re kid have an itchy rash for afew days & then enjoy lifelong immunity vs risking getting the disease when you’re older when it’s more dangerous!
Yups u read it right! Vaccines only PUSH OFF the body from getting the disease. I’m sure u all know vaccines only give u a couple yrs of protection
The chickenpox vax was because people can not keep their sick kids home. They have to work so their kids will be fine making all the kids in school sick. Better kids should get it when they are old enough to stay home by themself
the shingles shot is not covered by most insurances including
medicare. The out of pocket expense is over $200. If our senator really wants us to have this shot, he needs to pass legislation requiring NJ
insurance policies to cover it.
