Senator Singer: Nazi Comments Reflect Poorly On Opponents Of Pension And Benefits Reform

singer_tls[UPDATED] In response to comments made yesterday by an opponent of legislation reforming the state pension and benefits system for public employees comparing the Governor and Legislative leaders to Nazis, Senator Robert Singer issued the following statement, submitted to TLS:

“As someone of the Jewish faith who lost family in the Holocaust, I find comments made as part of yesterday’s demonstrations comparing Governor Christie, Senate President Sweeney, and Assembly Speaker Oliver to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis deeply offensive. There is simply no excuse, none, for those comparisons to be made in legitimate political discourse. Yesterday’s comments reflected poorly on both the individual making them as well as the organization he represented.”

“Pension and benefits reform for public workers is a difficult and emotional issue for lawmakers, advocates, and public employees alike. It is an issue that is deserving of a full and thoughtful debate by people of good will, and nobody expects that debate to be devoid of passion and hyperbole. However, comparing those who support the compromise legislation to the most cruel, murderous regime the world has ever known is neither historically accurate nor acceptable rhetoric by any standard.”

“Supporters and opponents of this legislation each hold perfectly valid points of view, and a free society both accepts and celebrates their differences. The rights exercised by the individual who made those hateful remarks are available to him because people from all walks of life and points of view died in the fight to eradicate Nazism.” TLS.

UPDATED Motzei Shabbos: Following the incident, Republican Assemblyman Jon Bramnick wants Shelton to resign.

  1. Maybe they should teach them some holocaust classes, maybe that will make them be less mean! THis is an adult making these comments, this is what so many of us were saying when it comes to kids making those kinds of comments. It starts at home, not in school!

  2. Goodness has no one ever put their foot in their mouth the guy said sorry but that is just not enough lets take as much advantage of the situation and use it to bleed middle class dry!!!!

  3. i was not at the rally but when i was told about the comments made by mr. shelton i saw a lot of hard work, sweat and progress towards an agreement between the cwa and trenton go down the drain. i would hope that in the future our leaders in the cwa will act like mature gentlemen and women and focus on the issues and not resort to name calling and muckracking. thank you.

  4. Maybe Cheif Lawson should meet with them and ask them to give some more classes in trenton on the holocaust? Why should he resign? did we do an investigation into the incident in Lakewood? No! it was sweped under the rug. Why not sweep this one too with the same broom!

  5. The point of the problem is when someone says; “hitler was a evil man he took away pentions!?!!?!” I’m sure all the millons killed with ‘cruelty’ wished ALL that whold have happened to them was ‘lose there pentions’! This guy whold trade a few ‘dead jews’ for “10%” of his pention! What a anti-semite/selfish pig!

  7. #7 Maybe you should take an English Class. It’s Chief Lawson, not Cheif, and swept, not sweped, and a sentence asking a question gets a question mark.

  8. Can’t agree more with the senator. Calling someone a “Nazi”was the most derogatory term you can offend a person . Now we are belittling this term and just because you don’t like him so he’s a “Nazi” ? !
