Senator Singer Files Resolution Urging NJ To Take Advantage Of Federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program

Families in Lakewood and across New Jersey would benefit tremendously from this program, Singer says

Senator Robert Singer (R-30) filed a resolution urging Governor Murphy to opt the state into to the Federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program to provide much-needed tax relief to families in New Jersey and advance educational opportunities for student success.

“The Federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program is a commonsense initiative that will deliver tax relief to families while expanding access to educational opportunities,” said Sen. Singer. “Families in Lakewood and across New Jersey would benefit tremendously from this program. I encourage the governor to take advantage of this opportunity to give parents more options, help students reach their full potential, and ensure hardworking families aren’t left behind while other states take advantage of this program.”

The program would provide a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for contributions made to state-recognized scholarship granting organizations, who would be required to grant scholarships to students for elementary and secondary education expenses, including tuition, books, supplies, uniforms, transportation, computers, and other eligible expenses.

Under the Federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program, states have the sole discretion to recognize granting organizations and the governor must decide whether to participate in the program.
