New Jersey state Senator Bob Singer (R-Lakewood) says his bill to change the date of the upcoming June, 3 primary date to avoid falling out on the second day of Shavuos, and which was recently signed by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, honors the “rich diversity of our State.”
“As legislators, it is our responsibility to ensure every eligible voter can participate in our democracy without undue barriers,” Singer said in a statement.
“By rescheduling New Jersey’s June primary to occur on June 10, we are accommodating voters observing Shavuot and honoring the rich diversity of our State. With the Governor’s signature, this change ensures that voters are not forced to choose between exercising their right to vote and their deeply held religious traditions.”
The bill, which pushed back the election by one week to June 10, passed the Senate and Assembly unanimously late last year.
