Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today on the need to uphold New Jersey’s law prohibiting self-service dispensing of motor fuel at gas stations:
“I continue to support the full service requirement for New Jersey’s gas stations and I will oppose any attempt to rescind the law that has effectively served the best interests of the state’s motorists for decades. As long as I am Senate President, the ban on self-serve will stay in place.
“Full service is matter of convenience and especially important to the disabled, senior citizens and others who would find it difficult or impossible to operate gas pumps.
“We’ve been doing it the right way in New Jersey. We should not change.”
O’Scanlon proposed the change last week.
O’Scanlon’s bill would not only decriminalize the act of pumping one’s own gas, but also provide for self-service islands at New Jersey’s gas stations.
“Each facility would be required to operate at least one island full service for three years following enactment, and the bill also allows for gas retailers to charge a lesser price for self-service gasoline,” O’Scanlon said. “The time has come for New Jersey to join the other 48 – soon to be 49 – States that allow self-service gas. The prohibition of self-service is an antiquated law, long overdue for a second look. No one can come up with a justified reason to criminalize the act of pumping one’s own gas. This is just another area with which New Jersey’s laws must move ahead with the times.”

What is Senate President Steve Sweeney saying…………….New Jersey has been doing it right and the other 48 (soon to be 49) States have not been doing it right? Di we screw it up? Anyone who drives outside of this State knows is you need someone to pump it for you it is available. And for the record………there are more senior citizens in Florida pumping their own gas then there would be in New Jersey. Oh wait…………can anyone say “SNOWBIRDS”
“jersey boys don’t pump gas”
B”H! I hate to pump my own gas, especially in the winter
I think it is safer for women not to get out of the car.
O’scanlon is right. Hes not saying take away the full serve, hes just saying to also have self-serve.
This is crazy. Do you guys realize that we pay extra to cover the costs of paying for gas attendants? Its insane. Why should we pay for such a thing? Highway robbery. Christie should raise the gas tax while eliminating this ridicoulos law. make it a revenue neutral costs. Then use that extra revenue to pay his pension obligations.
