Senate President Sweeney Calls On Public Employees To Pay Percentage Of Health Benefits Premium

public workers lkwdIn the face of what he expects to be significant blowback from party supporters, Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) unveiled a proposal today that calls on all of the state’s 510,000 public employees to kick in significantly more money for their medical benefits.

“My plan is real simple: public employees will pay more,” Sweeney said at an afternoon news conference at the Statehouse.

Sweeney said he expects his proposal will upset public employees, as it did when he pushed for similar reform in 2006.

“Then, the system was in a free fall and collapsing. Five years later, we are much worse off,” said Sweeney. Full story in Star Ledger.

  1. So does that mean your gonna pay them more to offset the cost of them spending more for their health benefits..or are they all going to the poor house like the rest of us

  2. are all the senators, judges, attorneys, governors, mayors, committeeman etc. included in this little brain storm? I think not. The system is in trouble because of the politicians plain and simple not the every day municipal or state employee.

  3. i work for the county and everyone thinks i get paid a lot. not so, i just make it from paycheck to paycheck. and i have no car payment, so you do the math. the only good thing about my job is the benefits. if you make me pay some crazy amount for my health benefits i wont be able to afford the co-pay!

  4. Well Mr Sweeney you’ve got a lot of contract busting to do. It ain’t gonna fly.

Nothing wrong with asking employees to contribute more but public employee unions will take you out behind the woodshed for a good spank.

Most folks pay a certain percentage for themselves and additional for each family member added- that sounds fair.

When pay for govt jobs was below civilian scale for an equal position…benefits was the attraction. When folks took those jobs, they did so for job security and the benefits .

Now that govt jobs are paying the same and in many cases more than civilian counterpart, the employee should contribute more, or at minimum pay substantial for every family member added.

Bust the unions, Mr. Democrat…..I don’t think you want to do that- they’re responsible for you getting elected.

I’m guessing this is nothing more than smoke and empty gesture on your part. I do believe you have no problem in raising taxes though and perhaps that’s the ultimate goal of this fiasco ( on your part).

  5. Mr Sweeney is a liberal Democrat but he’s also a smart politician and know the shift is going conservative so that’s were he’s going. He already is being very pro second amendment I think we will see more from him in more conservative legislation. Hey nothing wrong with that as long as it gets done!

  6. no wonder we are going bust . over 20% of our workforce are public employees . That means we have pay 20% tax just to cover public employees or the ship will sink.

i have a better idea. get rid of half the public employees.

  7. Public workers have always been payed less because they receive free health care. You can’t change the rules in the middle of the game because the State mis manages it’s money.

  8. I work for an accountign firm that has state workers as a large part of their clientle. There is no way anyone is going to tell me that state workers aren’t overpaid (and in many cases underqualified)for the job they do.And that is without the benefits they receive. And don’t give me this line of “Why don’t you work for the state/public sector?”Believe me I would love to and applied many times. Every state worker I ever met, except for policemen, admitted to me that they only got their job through pull.

  9. Hey #11
Public Employees DO NOT get paid less than the privet sector, that is the way it was a long time ago. NOW they make more than the same privet sector with all the benefits! You should check around.
