Senate President: I am Working with Port Authority to Protect New Jersey’s Interests

sweeney tlsSenate President Steve Sweeney on Tuesday spoke with Port Authority Chairman John Degnan about his concerns with the Task Force Report and will meet with him regarding the proposals to overhaul the agency and to voice his strong objections to the plan to reduce PATH services and privatize its operations.

“I spoke with Chairman Degnan to express my concerns about the recommendations in the Task Force’s Report, including the proposal to reduce PATH services and I will meet with him to follow through on our discussion,” said Senator Sweeney. “I want to create a dialogue with him to ensure the final result protects New Jersey residents and the critical transportation services managed by the authority. Solving problems requires leadership and communication and I am pleased to have begun that process with Chairman Degnan today and I thank him for agreeing to work with me on this issue.”

The task force’s report recommended transferring PATH operations to another operator and eliminating overnight service.

“I expressed my grave concerns about the recommendation to eliminate overnight PATH services and the idea to privatize or transfer PATH operations,” said Senator Sweeney. “We have worked very hard at the state level to create enormous economic growth through the Urban Transit Hub program and transit services are a critical component of this success.”
