School Bus Safety Message From LBOE Interim Superintendent Laura Winters

Laura A. Winters, the Interim Superintendent of Schools, would like to remind all parents and guardians to stress the importance of all issues regarding bus safety with their children.Winters had the following safety message to relay:

When students are waiting for the school bus, they should wait at the bus stop, and stand back from the curb. Once on the bus, students should put their safety belt on and quietly speak to other children around them. When getting off the bus, students should take five giant steps away from the bus, and out of the danger zone. Students need to maintain eye contact with the bus driver, and wait for the driver to signal them when to cross in front of the bus. Students should know that they must never bend down near or under the bus or go back for anything that they may have left on the bus.

Wintes also tells TLS the staff members – upon returning for the new school year – received a variety of training sessions in regard to Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB), School Safety and Security, Curriculum, District Policies and Procedures, the National Writing Project, and Technology.

Yesterday, all district staff attended a kick-off breakfast, and a powerful training workshop given by Dr. Ruby Payne, who is recognized internationally for her book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty. Dr. Payne spoke about the mind set of economic classes and overcoming the hurdles of poverty.

  1. How do all those training sessions help if children are still left on the bus unintentionally. Who paid for this breakfast and why do they need to hear a speech on understanding poverty?? How does that help the drivers?

  2. My kids bus never showed up on the first 2 days, and today the bus driver came to the stop at 8:55am with a full bus load of kids from another school. The driver then said to wait at stop until she unloads and returns to pick up.

In all my years waiting for bussing I never seen such chaos, and un orginized routes.

  3. # 1 … re-read the article then get yourself a day job
    # 2 … if your child(ren) are not picked up please call the transportation department and let them know… either they were missed accdentally or where they are standing is not listed as a stop or whatever reason..Sadly, many children were not picked up…They will rectify the situation. It’s the first few days of school, It’s chaos until things settle down into place and become more organized. Everyone must be patient.

  4. #2 and #3 call the BOE offices at 7329053688.
This year is by far the best busing we had in a long time.
Every thing is very well organized.
When you bus over 25K students there will always be problems here and there….

  5. What does it matter who paid for breakfast, were you asked to donate from your pocket, as for the poverty, it can give an insite to problems with children that come from poverty homes, how to work with them. Seems like people enjoy complaining if it doesn’t concern their lives.

  6. #3 responding to Admin

I am glad you feel that way on how things are running

How about the TLS puts out a poll on this issue…..

You might be in for a little suprise…..

  7. I have a great idea, Lets have your kids walk to school like many other children do. Why do the same people always complain, are you getting paid to complain. I thought the BOE took the right steps to once n foreall stop the money train. The time is nearing for the domino’s to start falling.
