Save On Tolls With Carpool E-ZPass

ezpass[Reader Submitted] Many people may not be aware of this but they can get huge carpool savings and pay only $2 toll when there is at least three people in the car and they are crossing any Port Authority Bridge or Tunnel (George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing, Bayonne Bridge) http://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/e-zpass.html

Carpooling is both eco-conscious and the most economical way to travel.

The Port Authority Carpool Plan provides the largest toll discount at the Port Authority bridges and tunnels. By carpooling, you save the most money and also reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

The toll for Port Authority Carpool customers is $2 per vehicle at all hours.

You must have an E-ZPass account and you must register for the Port Authority Carpool Discount Plan.

To register for the Carpool Plan, call 800-333-8655 (New York Service Center) or 888-288-6865 (New Jersey Service Center). Be sure to have your account number or tag number and PIN for account access.

Three or more people must be in a vehicle to be eligible for the discount (no commercial vehicles qualify).

Customers must use a staffed “Cash-E-ZPass” toll lane and come to a complete stop so the toll collector can verify the number of occupants in the vehicle.

  1. Yes, it is true that NY ezpass is much cheaper than NJ by the Verrazano. If you have a NJ EZpass you pay the full cash price of $13 !!!!!! If you have a NY ezpass, you pay only $9.60. You can get a NY ezpass even if you don’t live there. I switched myself about a year ago.

  2. EZ pass has various agencies throughout the area. EZ pass of NY, EZ pass of NJ, EZ pazz NY thruway, etc. Anyone in the US can sign up with any agency anywhere regardless of your address. Therefore if you use the verazanno it pays to sign up with NY to get the reduced toll. Plus call to link your account to this carpool program and pay only $2 at certain crossings when there are three people in the car (can include children)

and NO, your pregnant wife does NOT count as two! 🙂

  3. There is also a special commuter program . If you travel more than a specified amount of times per month ( I think it’s a minimum of 18) the toll is 1/2 price. It doesn’t matter how many you have in the car, and it’s only on port authority crossings . It’s free to sign up. If you do a lot of commuting by yourself it’s a no brainer.

  4. I just called NJ EZ Pass. The woman told me that NY is cheaper on the Verrazano, however NY does not offer the carpool rate. Is that true? If it is, then I would prefer to save $6 on the Outerbridge than $3.40 on the Verrazano. I usually travel with my family.

  5. I called NY and they said that it is not true. They do offer the carpool rate. It is the MTA that only allows NY to provide the discount. I will cancel my NJ account and get a NY one.

  6. Please include my first comment as well, which read: “I just called NJ EZ Pass. The woman told me that NY is cheaper on the Verrazano, however NY does not offer the carpool rate. Is that true?
