Roundabout Project For The New Central and Hope Chapel Intersection In Jackson Moves One Step Closer

Following years of planning, Ocean County has finally issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the design and construction of a roundabout at the intersection of New Central Avenue (County Road 31) and North Hope Chapel Road (County Road 639) in Jackson Township.

The four-leg intersection is currently “stop controlled” on the New Central Avenue approaches with “skewed geometry,” according to the county.

The proposed improvements include a modern roundabout to eliminate left-turn conflicts and lower speeds approaching the intersection. It will include advanced signage and pavement markings on all approaches. (see rendering)

The project calls for a comprehensive redesign of the intersection into a roundabout, including necessary utility relocations and road improvements. In addition to the central roundabout, contractors will be charged with ensuring full accessibility and safety for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

Ocean County has received a Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds from the Federal Highway Administration, which will be used to fund the project.

A similar roundabout, though more complex, is planned for Lakewood.

I’m not a bad driver BH but roundabouts always get me confused in upstate NY or by Prospect Park in Brooklyn and I’m glad when I’m past them. I’m not looking forward to this being the improvement, I’m nervous about this.

I Think this is a great idea, but in this town people don’t follow the laws of driving, so this will be a disaster.

, this is an old picture, currently there is a traffic light at this intersection. Does the county not know this?! Why are they saying this intersection is “stop controlled”?!
