Rible Calls For Return of NJ Cop Killer As President Obama Visits Cuba

assemblyman dave rible Assemblyman Dave Rible renewed his call today for the extradition of convicted cop killer Joanne Chesimard as President Obama begins his historic trip in Cuba.

“It is inconceivable to me that our country’s leaders are attempting to restore diplomatic relations with a country that has been knowingly harboring a cold-blooded cop killer,” Assemblyman Rible said. “Cuba has shown blatant disregard for both our justice system and our law enforcement community by not returning Joanne Chesimard to the United States.”

Chesimard, then a leader of the Black Liberation Army, was convicted in 1977 for the brutal execution of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster on the Turnpike four years earlier. She escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba, where she has been hiding out for 37 years.

Rible also renewed his call for the extradition of George Wright, who killed World War II veteran Walter Patterson at a gas station in Wall Township in 1962. Wright subsequently escaped from prison and, as a member of the Black Liberation Army, hijacked an airliner and sought asylum in Algeria, and was later discovered in Portugal in 2011.

Rible reiterated his call for both fugitives in his bill, AR-47, which expresses support for the “Walter Patterson and Werner Foerster Justice and Extradition Act.” New Jersey Representatives Chris Smith and Albio Sires have introduced the bill in Congress.

“Our diplomatic ties with other nations, including Cuba, should be contingent upon the return of fugitives who have fled the United States to avoid punishment for their crimes,” Assemblyman Rible said. “Despite the time that may have passed, we must not forget that we owe it to the victims’ families to have these fugitives face justice by being returned to the United States.”

  1. Thank you, Assemblyman. President Obama hosted “Poetry Night” at the White House five years ago. One of the guests of honor was the rapper, Common, who wrote a song about Joanne Chesmiard (Song for Assata). Such is the President’s contempt for the police force.
