A special ceremony was held during the recent graduation ceremony of the new County Correction Officers to honor retiring Ocean County Warden Theodore J. Hutler Jr.
Warden Hutler had been in charge of Ocean County’s Correctional facilities for over 34 years. He is the longest-serving Jail Warden in New Jersey’s history, and his retirement marks the end of an era.
At the ceremony, held in Georgian Court College, Warden Hutler was presented with an award by Wardens Mark Cranston of Middlesex County, Donald Lombardo of Cape May County and Charles O’Neill of Somerset County. He was also presented with an award by Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, as well as by the 48 new recruits and Charles Dishon, Director of the Ocean County Police Academy.
Sherriff Mastronardy related that the prison system has undergone numerous changes and improvements under Warden Hutler’s watch. He recalled witnessing the aftermath of a fire in Ocean County Jail in 1959. Several prisoners had died because they were locked in during the fire and the rest were huddled outside. Today, the entire prison system has been brought into the technological age under Warden Hutler’s guidance and is extremely prepared for any eventuality that may arise.
The Sheriff also stated that, in his 10 years as a police chief, he has seen how Warden Hutler has always been very cooperative with all segments of law enforcement and is always willing to give assistance and to share information with all local law enforcement agencies.
The Sheriff further stated that it is obvious by all law enforcement meetings that Warden Hutler is extremely respected by everyone in the room, and he leaves behind a great legacy.
