Report: Former Corrections Officer who Shot himself at Lakewood Gun Range was Facing Prison Time

suicide 1-5-15The former state corrections officer who killed himself at a Lakewood gun range Monday was expected to be sentenced this week to three years in prison, according to a report in the Star Ledger.

Jeffrey Mazeski, 32, of Woodbridge, admitted in October to aggravated assault, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon as part of a plea agreement where the prosecutor would recommend a five-year prison sentence with parole eligibility after three years, court records showed.

In May 2013, Mazeski pulled over a 17-year-old driver on Route 35 near Chain O’ Hills Road in Woodbridge to berate him for what he believed was improper or aggressive driving, according to court records. During that incident he also pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the 15-year-old passenger, the documents showed.

Two months later, in July 2013, Mazeski was accused of going to a Starbucks on Route 1 in Woodbridge with a handgun, badge and handcuffs in his possession, representing himself as a police officer, court records showed. It’s unclear what he did at the Starbucks that caused him to be charged. Read more in Star Ledger.
