In an interview with the New Jersey Globe, Rep. Chris Smith said he will run for a 21st term in 2020. Smith, whose district includes Lakewood, is a highly respected Congressman who has been serving in the House since 1980, when he was first elected at age 27.
Rep. Smith is the lone Republican member of New Jersey’s delegation in Washington, where he currently serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs. He enjoys widespread support in New Jersey’s 4th District, where he last won reelection in 2018 over challenger Josh Welle 55.4%-43.1%.
Smith has been a longtime champion of the rights of the disabled and disadvantaged, and he has introduced numerous bills to help those who need assistance. He is strongly supported by the Lakewood community, where he has cemented a deep and lasting relationship with its residents, and he is known to be accessible and willing to help his constituents in any way he can.
Smith’s announcement that he will run for reelection comes at a time when many senior House Republicans have been saying that they will decline to seek another term in office.
No challengers have yet to announce their candidacies to try to Smith, though there are several Democrats who are likely to attempt to unseat him.
he has been aq great representative for the Lakewood community. we hope he stays as long as the lord will give him the capability for doing so. Keep up the good work, Chris. We are all proud of you and thankful for all you have done for the Lakewood community.
