Reminder From MVC: REAL ID Emergency Program Is Available for Critical Travel Needs

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is reminding residents of the new REAL ID Emergency Issuance Program, designed to assist travelers facing life-or-death emergencies or urgent international trips requiring a REAL ID-compliant Driver License or Non-Driver ID. With air travel security requirements looming, don’t wait until the last minute – this program ensures you can secure your ID quickly, but only under strict qualifying conditions.

Key Program Details Every Traveler Needs to Know:

  • No On-Site Printing: All Driver Licenses and Non-Driver IDs are processed centrally and shipped via expedited mail. Expect a minimum of three business days for processing and delivery – plan ahead to avoid delays!
  • Two Emergency Appointment Types:
    • Life-or-Death Emergency Service: Available for those traveling within 14 days due to a genuine life-or-death situation (e.g., family medical crises abroad).
    • Urgent Travel Service: Strictly for travelers departing within 14 days – no exceptions for earlier planning.
  • Appointment Location: All emergency services are held exclusively at the Trenton Regional Service Center in Trenton, NJ.
  • Critical Eligibility Rules:
    • If you have a valid U.S. passport (even if expired up to 1 year from your travel date) or other TSA-accepted ID, you do NOT qualify for this program.
    • No walk-ins allowed – appointments are mandatory.
    • Availability is not guaranteed; slots fill up fast.
    • A $80 expedited shipping fee applies (no additional charge for booking the appointment).
    • Appointments are non-transferable and cannot be rescheduled for others.

“The REAL ID deadline has passed, and federal enforcement is in full effect for domestic flights and secure federal buildings,” said an MVC spokesperson. “This emergency program is a lifeline for true urgencies, but it’s not a substitute for proactive planning. Check your ID now to avoid being grounded.”

How to Apply:

Visit the official NJ MVC website or call the appointment line immediately if you meet the criteria. Act fast – delays could mean missing your flight or critical family obligations.

For full details and to check eligibility, go to nj.gov/mvc or contact your local MVC office. Stay safe, stay prepared – your REAL ID is your ticket to travel!

This whole thing is ridiculous.
The next available appointments for Real ID are 3 months out, plus 6 weeks processing time. I couldn’t book a flight 6 weeks in advance because there was no way to get a Real ID.

There needs to be another option aside from shlepping to Trenton and paying for expedition, or waiting 5 months.

They have been warning you about RealID for over 7 years now. This is your fault and yours alone
