Red Bricks in Downtown Lakewood to Be Replaced with Concrete

The red bricks in downtown Lakewood will be replaced with concrete, TLS has learned.

Mayor Ray Coles confirmed to TLS that the bricks of the sidewalks – not Red Square – will be replaced due to them being a tripping hazard.

“They cause many accidents every year and cost taxpayers quite a bit,” Coles said.

The Mayor says the plan is to use stamped concrete to simulate the look of the bricks.

“I’m hoping we can get the same red tone of the current brick pavers,” Coles said.

The funds for the project will come from UEZ money, not local tax dollars, the Mayor stated.

The Township plans to begin the project in the Spring, and repair block by block from Route 88 up to Fifth Street. Each block will be done before the next is started to minimize disruptions.

Replace it with PAVEMENT. Theres no reason why clifton cant have 2 lanes & a side walk. This will alleiviate much of the traffic.

“The funds will come from UEZ money, not local tax dollars.” said the mayor. Now a question for the mayor- Where do you think the UEZ money comes from? The UEZ money comes from sales tax which every person pays, therefore the money IS coming from local tax payers via the sales tax. The state does not create money, it just collects taxes (money) and uses it as payments.

The UEZ is a program that reinvests sales taxes in the locales where they were generated instead of kicking the funds back to Trenton to be added to the general budget.
Do while you are sorta correct about it being local taxes, his point still stands.

We have so many men and businesses that specialize in masonry in town. The township should be engaging with them for this project.

us local contractors should be able to bid on the job! why are out of town vendors getting our jobs, and doing the work without supervision or timelines, my company would of been done all the repairs along rt 9 long ago. We could get it done half the price and 3 times the speed!!! anyone that has connections to the township should please pass on this message

I’ve walked those bricks for 68 years and never tripped, people are just stupid or looking for a lawsuit. Might as well concrete all of Lakewood ruining a once “Camelot” to show the decaying town it is. Lifelong resident here and I have eyes that see.

So I’m guessing honest replies from longtime residents are not allowed on the scoop.

I believe the red bricks were laid down in the early 1980s, the same time when lots of space in the parking lot near the municipal building were bricked and turned into the “town square.” Lakewood got Federal money to do those “improvements.”

Are the bricks falling apart because they are old?
Infrastructure usually lasts for about 30 years.
Have people bean tripping over the bricks since the first year that they where laid down? Or has it been a more recent thing over the last few years?
