And when the Hindenburg burst into flames in 1937 at Lakehurst NJ, the tragedy was felt around the world. Bill Schmidt of the Navy Lakehurst Historical Society will reconstruct the final voyage of the storied airship. The Hindenburg (LZ-129) measured almost 803 feet in length and 135 feet in diameter. It bore many hundreds of passengers and gracefully traveled thousands of miles.

What triggered the tragedy when docking maneuvers faltered? What was the cost in human lives? What did it mean for the future of aviation and for the image of a re-emerging world power? Bill Schmidt’s revealing presentation brings local and world history to life.

The Navy Lakehurst Historical Society maintains a museum of artifacts salvaged from the dirigible and a reconstruction of its bridge on the grounds of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, within view of the spot of the devastation which is marked by a plaque.
