Beginning today, passengers going through a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at the nations airports will no longer need to remove their footwear, per updated TSA policy.
The new policy, which reverses a nearly 25 year requirement put in place after the attempted shoe bomber incident in late 2001, is expected to help ease the notoriously long lines.
Individuals who are unable to present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification, a federal standard that took affect in May, may still be asked to remove their shoes.

This makes perfect sense. After all, if the shoe bomber had a real ID, there’s no way he could’ve put a bomb in his shoe.
Real-ID Holder Thrilled to Learn That Fresh, Clean Pairs of Socks Are No Longer Necessary For Boarding Planes
Real-ID holder, Frank Sockenberg, was thrilled to learn today that he’ll no longer need to put on a fresh, clean pair of socks before heading out to the airport, because the removal of shoes at airport checkpoints is no longer a requirement for Real ID holders.
“My biggest fear in life has always been the odor that emanates from my stale pair of socks when I remove my shoes at airport checkpoints,” he said, “and the gut-piercing reality that I might have to put on a fresh, clean pair of socks before heading out to the airport, which is an incredibly exhausting and energy-draining task for me.”
“However, now, with the new rules in place, I can pop out of bed, grab a quick breakfast and head out to the airport without putting on a fresh, clean pair of socks,” he said, “and that makes life so much easier for me… I mean, truth be told, the socks’ foul odor is not really detectible unless I remove my shoes. So, with the newly relaxed rules, I’m good to go.”
“What can I say,” the elated frequent flier added, “I’m incredibly excited to begin this new chapter in my life!”
Mr. Sockenberg also told reporters that he has already scratched off ‘sock-cleaning’ from his scheduled list of chores because, as he explained, “Wearing fresh, clean pairs of socks is old-fashioned and outdated; it’s no longer applicable in today’s advanced and modern society of Real IDs.”
