I really don’t understand the conversation. WE ARE BROKE! TAXES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF. What don’t you understand? I pay more a month for property taxes than the average person pays for rent or mortgage. Are there other areas that need to be addressed YES. Does that mean it is wrong to address EMS? NO! I am sympathetic to the pay cuts that EMS has endured. I am also sympathetic to all the unemployed in Lakewood who still have to pay their sky high property taxes. We elected a Governor and a Township Committee to deal with this issue, and when they do, we complain. It’s Bizzaro world! Unlike the current US administration, you can’t increase spending and at the same time reduce taxes, it defies the laws of economics. So thank you Mayor Langert for your leadership and thank you EMS for your services and sacrifice, the two are NOT mutually exclusive. I am appreciative of the savings and at the same time we need to lend our moral and financial support to all those dedicated individuals that have taken a pay cut… it hurts as much as higher taxes.
Now we also need to look at all areas of savings including busing (an issue that is so often raised). Let’s find ways to bring that cost down. But busing is NOT a favor to the private school system, it is funded by the tax payers who primarily don’t receive anything else from the school budget except for busing. However we still need to look there. Some ideas:
• Consolidate schools and buses: I see so many buses go half empty. Why can’t schools that are in close proximity share buses?
• No more busing for children past 6th grade (yes this will affect me). There is no reason that they can’t walk/bike to school, the exercise may even help them.
• Keep to the 3 mile radius guideline for eligibility to any school – yes, this will affect me too. Why is it the tax payers problem to pay for your busing? Just because you chose to send your kid to Tashbar/YTT/Cheder instead of the closest school? I understand the reason, my only point is that it is not fair to make others pay for busing when there is an alternative that would not require the additional expense.
• No more busing on legal Holidays, will it kill people to take their kids to school on a day off?
We also need to look at all the extracurricular activities in the Public School system. When times are tough should we be funding art, baseball, football fields etc? Yes they are important to the growth of children but should the tax payer pay for things beyond strict education? Why can’t parents pay a minimal amount to cover these activities. Think of it like a co-pay when you visit the doctor. Should every taxpayer in Lakewood pay for these “nice to haves”?
We need to see how we can tighten our belts across the board and stop the us against them attitude that is so incendiary and glaring beneath the surface of the debate. This is OUR town and it can only be saved if we work TOGETHER!

so well said
nice said. I know this is hindsight but if there is someway we can rent to other twnsps or do something with that wasteful pork spending dpw complex that would be great, also the public school system must be trimmed big time there has to be ways to save money on that huge budget
Put the board of education on the side for a few moments the TOWNSHIP COMMITEE raised property taxes from $23000000 to $43000000 from 2005 -2009 that’s almost double!!! We must cut now!!!
i pay $600 a month in property taxes i cant afford it!! and i hear that its going up this year even with the new mayor
I THINK THE OILAM SHOULD HIRE AN AUDITOR TO LOOK OVER LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIPS BUDGET.
maybe show the budget to someone on the federal level
to no 3 and 5 you are 100 percent right there has to be some way to cut taxes big time
Our Republicans are the same as democrats . they spend and raise taxes an continue to spend even when every one else is cutting
time to re negotiate the contracts and get rid of pension for all township employees.
if someone knows of a real good lawyer obviously from outside of lkwd i would be willing to chip in $1000 to do a class action or something of that nature to figure how to lower taxes
Readers scoop for mayor!!
The town should form a committee to review it’s expenditures and income. We have many qualified people living in town, especially our retirees, who have the expertise to review the books and make recommendations to cut expenses without too adverse an impact on the town. Should we consolidate the MUA with the DPW and eliminate administrators? Should we consolidate purchasing with a neighboring community to get better prices? Is our police dept being run efficiently? And, of course, the big monster in the house is the school budget. Review all non-teaching positions and determine if they are necessary. Yes, the busing budget is also a great place to save money. I’ll bet they would come up with millions in savings.
DREAM ON.
You must be crazy if you want to cut bussing! The traffic is horrendous as is and on days without bussing its even more so! Its worth every cent!
Sir, you’re barking up the wrong tree. It aint the buses that’s draining the system (lousy 400.00) a year . it also aint the art and sports at school . its the tremendous amount of waste which goes on : the bulueclaws, the hi tech garbage dump, the new fields (barely used) the lots and lots of freebies, the special education, the illegal immigrants receiving loads of benefits, the empty lakewood shuttle, the double dipping of politicians, the full benefits packages of all gov workers, the paid sick days, the lifetime retirement packages, the fact that we have so many townships in itself is a problem, loads of waste yea, but not our busing or kids programs: PS if illegal aliens wouldn’t fill up our schools, our taxes would go down .
Comment 16 should be deleted!
was my comment #16 i bet it was not everyones opinion counts
what about using the same bus companies but at diffrent times boys at 8am an grils at 9am that would cut the price in half
the legal limit for busing an elementary student is not 3 miles it is 2!
the cost of busing is driven up by the numbers required for all of the different openings, closings, placement of schools. the public school buses are for the most part filled when they come to school, 54 students. not so for the private
