Readers’ Scoop: We As A Community Must Do Something Before Someone Gets Hurt

Readers-Scoop-Logo smallDear TLS,
In the past week there were 4 incidents, that I know of, in Raintree. Last week Wednesday or Thursday there was a robbery on Lanes Mill. Friday morning you posted a story of a robbery. Friday, right before Shabbos my next door neighbor’s alarm went off. It was a an attempted break in. A neighbor saw the perp/perps running away.

This morning my wife was not feeling well and decided to take a nap. Her car was in the driveway, an indication that someone is home.  At 11:00 she heard some banging noises coming from my kitchen sliding door . She immediately called the police. Perhaps she made enough noise to scare the guy away. The police came relatively quick. The police found pry marks on my door.

We as a community must do something before someone gets hurt. Until now, the first few incidents involved homes which were empty. But now they are targeting homes with the residents present.
Please keep my name anonymous.

Thank you.

  1. and there are those who keep saying things are better now than 20 years ago ~! NO WAY~
Absolutely get an alarm system and be vigilant ,lock your doors and report any suspicious activity ,perhaps we need more patrols by the LPD

  2. LCSW does not use marked cars purposely so they shouldn`t be visible. There probably is an advantage of also using the marked cars as a deterrant, but usually the crimes in this town are preformed by serial criminals who must get caught not scared off.

  3. abe, I have a gun if I blow a guys head off protecting my family I will be put in with all other criminals. and if they find out that I killed one of thier own I will be targeted.

  4. LCSW does do patrols in all areas of Lakewood, however this is a big town and they have limited members. We have to do our own by locking all doors, getting an alarm system, keeping lights on around the house and keeping our eyes and ears open.

  5. I am scared to be living in Rain tree, and i own guns, dogs, and an alarm system. These gang members and career burglars target nice neighborhoods where people work and kids are in school. Some good points being made here, but vigilance is the key. If you see people milling around who are not your neighbors, call the police. If you see a car that doesn’t belong on your street middle of the day, call the police. At this point in time, people would rather rob you then make a honest living. As we all can see, The LPD is having massive retirements, not just top brass, but patrolmen, who respond to our homes when you call. They are working at their minimum manpower, not hiring OT, because the politicians will not approve the OT. They are not hiring, because politicians want to be re-elected. Resident taxpayers is this what we want, to live in fear over a small amount of money. So maybe before we vote in November (this year and next) we need to ask ourselves, what does it take to make our town safe again. Instead of buying some new items, luxury, take out, maybe we too should tighten our spending and pay a little more to be safe once again.

  6. Why not have the current amount of cops from the day shift at the night shift and vice versa? It wil be better protection at no extra cost to taxpayers

  7. @ 10 – Yes they might have a lot of “rights” in this country but if you look at the laws, you have rights also.

@ 11 – If you remember about 2 years ago there was a story in Lakewood where an “elderly”/ older gentlemen woke up to hear his house being burglarized (on County Line Rd) he owned a LEGAL gun and fired at the intruders. One of them was hit in the head and died. The home owner was never charged as he did everything legally. – my point being that if you want to protect your home in New Jersey with a gun (lethal power) do a little research and you’ll see the laws are not totally against you (the homeowner/resident) even in this wonderful state of New Jersey

  8. resorting to using a gun would be a last ditch effort to protect you or your families life, however if was a case of me or him ,well that really does not even need ananswer but it would be him. For those who legally own firearms and are trained in there use I’m sure if it came right down to it and it was a matter of self defense ,the law would be on your side.
Be aware that laws dealing with such instances vary greaty from state to state . Also the right to own does not give you the right to carry ,so we are only talking about a situation of home invassion where your life is threatened

  9. For better lighting you have to call the Lakewood police department and give them the number on the pole. They will foward it on to the correct parties to be checked out. But you have to hound them and JCP&L as well.

  10. #15 yes I remember the shooting of the intruders but you may also recall all the death threats this guy got from family members of the dead guy. he has since moved.

  11. We pay high taxes & they should give us more security!!!! We also need more lighting on the streets if lkwd & more shomrim volunteers!!!!!plz we need more volunteers plz step up to the plate!!its a big mitzvah

  12. Ref. the street lights

I had a conversation with an employee of the local power company who was fixing a street light on my street recently. He explained that if we wanted more lights or higher power lighting a request to the township Committee must be made in writing requesting a new streetlight or one of higher power. The committee if it deems the area needs lighting ,they will contact the power company and pay for a new light to be installed or one of a larger size bulb.

He went on to explain that if a light is out, report it to the number found on your electric bill or the police .

Give the pole number Street and house number that’s nearest , if a pole number is not available give a house/business address that is most near the light that is out.

He related that too often people call in that a light that’s not working or blinking and give a general area on a long street that has many light. If its day time when they try to fix the lights for safety reason it takes too long to check every light on a street and they will bypass the problem to move on to work problem lights that have exact location listed

    Hope that helps

  13. We also live in Raintree, for the last 28+ years. We’re on a cul-de-sac, so “people” often would gather late at night, or even during the day, in front of our houses, drugs, etc. I’m a light sleeper and I have dogs that are “scary” to most people; however they know when someone doesn’t belong here and always alert us. What we did and still do was to call the Lakewood Police Department anytime there was a suspicious car in our area, and they responded immediately. Rather be safe then sorry. We always look out for our neighbors, some we don’t know that well, and some not at all. We all have to look out for each other. Since doing that, we haven’t had a problem in a few years. I agree with #13 and 16 (lighting). Lets work together. It’s not just Lakewood, ALWAYS getting a bad rap; it’s everywhere, just read the news.
