Readers’ Scoop: Unsolicited Phone Call – Je-hova Witnesses

Dear Gentleman. I have respect for many religions and the laws of the USA for all religions to practice. There is also Freedom of Speech. And there is also the Do not call list. I want to notify you that I was just called by a local number of 732.364.xxxx. Je-hova Witness Called ID. She claimed she was from Lakewood NJ. I informed her that I don’t appreciate unsolicited phone calls and I am on the “do not call list”. I told her this is a Jewish orthodox community and we don’t appreciate these phone calls. We have our own religion. Our own beliefs. Maybe they should try to use their time and money wisely and strengthen their own followers

She claimed she legally can call me to share the scriptures. I did call back on the call ID number to see if this number was a working phone number (many are fake non-working) and ask were exactly in Lakewood would the church be located. She then asked me who am I. I replied you just called me as she should know who she called.

Looks like on Google there are many addresses with this phone number.

Jehovah’s Witnesses Hall. New Prospect Rd, Jackson, NJ 08527 732.364.xxxx. Jehovah’s Witnesses. 6 Valley Rd, Jackson, NJ 08527 732.364.xxxx.

I just think this whole missionary outreach needs to be stopped in Lakewood. We had literature and disks dumped on our steps. This is insulting to the large Jewish community which is directly being targeted because we are Jewish. We are happy with our religion. There is a lack of respect of another’s religion when ones intention is to attempt to change the person’s religious beliefs. Freedom of speech does not mean one to have Freedom of no respect of others.

Can local legislation be presented to stop the door to door missionary distribution? How about a permit for distribution of items with a committee to approve questionable religious items. This also may be a safety factor as the people distributing are not from the area. Doesn’t Toms River have some type of law because of a murder?

A Lakewood Jewish Resident happy with who I am.

PS maybe try to use your time wisely and strengthen your own followers.

Not everything in this country needs to be legislated cause someone has a problem with it. Be polite, hang up the phone, move on with life.

I wholeheartedly agree with the author. Can we also somehow get the unsolicited Jewish organizations to stop calling EVERY NIGHT? Please!

If they have legislation to stop door to door missionaries, it could be they will apply to kiruv organizations that knock on doors of unaffiliated jews as well..

First let me say I am Chistian and do not appreciate those calls either. When they come to my door I pretend I’m not home. But what I don’t understand is why you think Lakewood should be exempt from these calls or visits? Just because a high number of Jewish people live in the town they shouldn’t call any Lakewood number?

The rest of the world has to deal with minor annoyances, no one is exempt.

Freedom of speech. Anyone who tries to stop them should be jailed and prosecuted for trying to take away their First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech.

If you don’t like it, politely hang up on them.

Non-profits are exempt from the Do Not Call List, just as non-profits are exempt from paying property taxes.

I get phone calls

I also get phone calls from Jewish organizations looking for donations and hawking Jewish canadiates and Jewish values during election time. They also come to the door, ring the bell and knock on the door, sometimes they look in the window. I don’t go yelling and screaming to the world about it. Maybe I should, maybe that’s the way it’s done. I don’t know. What do you think? I think these phone calls should be illegal and the door to door stopped also. I’m with you! When you stop one group from promoting their religious freedom, you stop all. It snow balls into something you really don’t want.

#9:

The x’s does not mean xxxx. It just means that the Scoop does not want to post the real numbers. So it is not 9999.

i am the author of the article. I did voice my opinion to the person and told them not to ever call me. I have freedom of speech and i notifed them not to call me. My rights are also to tell people not to call me (especially if they refuse to let me know who they are by name – place…)and I can then file harrasment charges if they continue.

I also have freedom of speech and this is why I penned this article.

We need to voice our opinion to these missionaries who need to know we dont need to be converted and they are not welcome on our property.

Respect is to respect others.

Part of their religion is to convert others especialy “saving the souls of the Jews”

I agree. no religion should be knocking on anyones door to tell them to “seek the truth” of another religion.

lets try to help our own faihtful be better.

If I pay for my phone bill and I put myself on the do not call list then you shouldn’t be calling me as I pay the bill and I specifically said DONT call me.
This goes for everyone, while on the topic.
Jewish businesses beware. The state of NJ has very stiff penalties for violating the telemarketing laws. So much that in most cases a single pre recorded automated call can legally cost you $40,000 in fines. As each violation is $10,000 and with each call the following laws are being violated:
1. Placing a call to someone on the Do Not Call list
2. Unregistered telemarketer.
3. After 9pm
4. Fake callerID
5. No announcing at the beginning of the call: A. Who the call is being made for, and B. Who is making the call.

When lakewood became  an exclusive “Jewish community”? Or area 732 only belongs to your community? Just hang up and move on.

Wondering

Just as the Orthodox cry for freedom to practice their religion, others cry for the same. The Jehovah’s attempt at conversion is a crucial part of their beliefs. I think they get credit for each conversion toward entering Heaven. They do canvass calls which means they have no idea what religion the person they are calling practices. It’s their right to call you and try to convert you. The Mormon religion does much the same thing with conversions. This is America, you cannot legislate against the practice of religion. Common courtesy dictates that you simply state that you’re not interested and hang up.

they have been around forever and will never go away. Please just ignore them and don’t write articles about it.

Kids

As long as they don’t talk to children, the best thing to do is ignore them, and they will get the point. If they talk to children then there is an issue. Over Yom Tov I was out of town and a ‘born-again’ neighbor tried to talk to my kids about their religion. We suspected something like this was going to happen, and when it did, we called the kids inside, and my relative had a talk with the neighbor, and I had a talk with my children about child predators coming in all sizes and shapes (including nice elderly neighbors, who shouldn’t be talking to children about such issues)

to those that state to be quiet

to those that state to be quiet, that is why missionaries have infiltrated the community over the years. We have had such cases in Lakewood, Denver , Flatbush, Yerushalayim and many communities.

They learn our customs and than will go futher to undermine our families. This has been an issue for generations.

Never keep quiet. Its time to say stop this. Out fathers stood up and protested. Why are we so complacent.

Really?
