Readers’ Scoop: A Commuter Airline For Lakewood’s Airport

Readers-Scoop-Logo smallI believe that there be a push that a commuter airline like United Express should operate from Lakewood to Washington DC. This link would open the entire U.S. and international routes to the local area. I personally travel a lot and know that the closest alternative in this area is an airport one hour away.

We’d not only bring travel to the area by attracting people within a great radius of Lakewood, but it would add jobs and help grow the local economy as well.

  1. That would put Lakewood on the map. Right now you have to travel one hour min. to any airport (A.C., Philly, Newark, etc.). Instead of a zoo, they should concentrate on making Lakewood a “city” with an airport. It can start small like A.C. did, but look how that has grown. I think it’s time to update the travel dept. in Lakewood. A rail system wouldn’t be bad either.

  2. finally a great idea! can we also get a helipad there and have fights to NYC? what a really great idea . let’s keep it up people

  3. there is a bigger airport in Wall, what makes you think we can compete with them? Didn’t we just abolish the airport commission because they wouldn’t sell the land next to the airport for housing? How would you expand the airport to get planes in and out if it surrounded with housing? I think a rail line to NY and AC would be better, and a lot less noise.

  4. I think they should make an airport in Jackson instead. Their town is 4 times the size of Lakewood and they have plenty more space to accommodate Dovid’s wish..

You gotta be foolish to think that teeny little Lakewood can support a serious commuter airport..

Also, the idea has too many impediments in our local region.. otherwise Monmouth County airport in Wall Twp which is far busier and far larger in size and capability to expand than our peewee size airport/runway would have undertaken this endeavor already..

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming..

  5. That would require larger planes to land and take off from the airport. And who would be the first to complain about the NOISE these larger planes make?

  6. Lakewood had better transportation in the 1920’s to the early 1950’s until they torr down the rail station to put up an Acme market. Progress in Lakewood has always gone in the wrong direction.

  7. How would it help our local economy? I personally would never visit or shop in Newark or Atlantic City. why would any out of towner think of shopping in Lakewood because of a commuters who flys out of here?

  8. it takes an hour to drive to newark it would take around that to take off fly to washington and land and taxi to the gate and deplane. Not really an advantage you would save some time maybe on checkin and security assuming the next flight was from the same gate area but not enough to be worth it.

  9. Before you publish such letters it makes sense to find out if the runway could accomodate commuter planes. The answers is NO. Wall twp airport can. Try there.

  10. The runway at Lakewood is not long enough for a commuter aircraft unless it is a turbo prop and even they are questionable. I think you have a better chance of getting that rail line. If that was to happen you would see your tax dollars increase because you have to add a larger terminal, places for their bags to go, people to work the airline (you know they don’t come cheap) and places to store equipment and vehicles to move these aircrafts along. I used to work for a large airline and believe me they are not cheap to operate. Then consider putting personnel on the airport for security round the clock and an Aircraft fire truck to be there when you do fueling and just in case, then that is more $$ because it can not be a one man operation there..minimum for an airport is 4 per truck. That is not cheap either. Oh not to mention about Noise Pollution for aircrafts flying in and out of Lakewood. I don’t think you thought this through enough.

  11. if there was enough call for it, you would have commuter flights at Allaire Airport. You can get a charter though. You can get a charter at Lakewood also. Maybe you can get an airline to fly into Lakehurst Navy or McGuire AFB. Good luck. Don’t wait for a train in Lakewood, that’s long gone. Go to Trenton to get to DC. Mercer County airport used to have commercial flights also years ago.

  12. Uh.. With a 3000 ft runway?! You gotta be kidding. With Allaire being 7000 feet long and double as wide, Lakewood doesn’t stand a chance… Besides, I actually would prefer keeping the statys quo in lakewood….

  13. # 19,

How about tax breaks for my family and I… This will maintain the incentive for us to stay and spend our big bucks here.

I mean.. would you get real!!
